MSC OPAS Program Coordina tor Sarah Nash said it will be one of only two performances the or chestra will make in Texas. The other performance will be in Houston, she said. Founded 96 years ago, the Pittsburgh Symphony is known worldwide for its top-class or chestra. International perfor mances in the Soviet Union and Poland won high critical acclaim in 1989. And during the Far East tour of 1987, this group became the first U.S. orchestra to visit the People’s Republic of China in that decade. “It is always a coup to get a performance by a leading Ameri can orchestra,’ MSC OPAS Presi dent David Woodcock said. “even at a world-class university such as Texas A&M.” In the past, the symphony has performed under the direction of such well-known composers as Otto Klemperer, Emil Paur, Anto nio Modarelli, Fritz Reiner and Andre Previn. But in Aggieland, it will come to life under the di rection of Lorin Maazel. As the music director of the Pittsburgh Symphony, Maazel is considered one of today’s most eagerly sought conductors. He has conducted more than 4,000 opera and concert performances with over 130 leading orchestras worldwide. However, it is his ability to perform as composer, musician and entertainer as well that has won him international respect. Born in Paris of American par ents, Maazel first achieved inter national status in 1959 by be coming the youngest conductor and the first American in history to be invited to conduct at the Bayreuth Festival. ,ntinue rery po s It goe people wl here are |M, and |o don’t "Jut these |1 look. Under his direction, the or chestra is scheduled to perform Johannes Brahms’ "Symphon) No. 1 in C minor, Op. 68" ami Kryztof Penderecki’s “Adagio." Detinue c Four Weddings’ heavy on romance By Paul Neale The Battalion “Four Weddings and a Funeral” Starring Hugh Grant, Andie MacDowell, John Hannah, Charlotte Coleman, David Bower, Gorin Redgrave and Rowan Atkinson Directed by Mike Newell Rated R ried.” “Coin’ to the chapel and we’re gonna get ma-aa-aa- The England-filmed flick, “Four Wed dings and a Funeral,” overflows with cham pagne, romance and not-so-coy moments. Billed as a romantic comedy, be warned: it’s pretty light on the comedy and heavy on the romance. “Weddings” is specifically the story of Charles (Hugh Grant), a 32-year-old bache lor whose ghosts of girlfriends past resurface at the weddings he attends. Charles is a wit ty, charming Brit who has been unable to make a commitment to any of them. When a ringing alarm clock rouses Charles, it’s a mad dash to the first of four weddings. He and his eclectic roommate, Scarlett (Charlotte Coleman), habitually over sleep for weddings. At the reception of the first of the four weddings, however, things are about to change. There, Charles meets Carrie (Andie Mac Dowell) a captivatingly beautiful and seduc tive American woman. That night, the two spend the evening together. Carrie then re turns to the United States and, for once, andgi meant ccord 8, There [Dallas a dguns Our c dguns us anc NRAr trol la" rarms "1 have re,” Lee Hun, let owne pse thei ht to b ’t take Adam fetitute i pt solve "The i jeets," I Ctlrb crirr Jeare cc |o cone tens." The film follows Charles, a 32-year-old bachelor, as he attends four weddings and a funeral fa his friends. The film is well-directed. And poignant moments such as a stirring eulogy and dra matic reading of a poem by W.H. Auden at the funeral are thought provoking. Charles feels that there may be something more to a one-night stand. Over the course of the three remaining weddings and the funeral, Charles reluctant ly falls in love with Carrie. The film is well-directed. And poignant moments such as a stirring eulogy and dra matic reading of a poem by W.H. Auden at the funeral are thought provoking. Giving life and preventing the film from being a series of not-so-holy matrimonies, Charles’ friends are a diverse bunch who go from wedding to wedding looking for their perfect match. The receptions would be as long as they are in real life without the well-developed characters of the wedding troupe. Among them is the boisterous, joyful Gareth (Simon Callow) whose merrymaking at the receptions is eventually his undoing. Gareth’s quiet, pensive partner Matthew (John Hannah) complements Gareth, the life of the party. Charles’ deaf brother, David (David Bow er), says some of the most important things in the film without ever saying a word. Par ticularly close to Charles, David prevents him from settling for less than his perfect mate. Fiona (Kristin Scott Thomas) is an attrac tive, cynical member of the group. She’s se cretly in love with Charles, which adds a bit of suspense to the film. The audience does n’t get to know her as well as her brother Tom (James Fleet), a clumsy bloke with a heart of gold. From wedding to wedding, Charles and his friends become ever more convinced that they don’t want to get married themselves unless they find true love. If only it could he so pleasant to attend four weddings and a funeral in real life. MATHEMATICS CONTEST Annual Freshmen and Sophomore MATHEMATICS CONTEST THURSDAY, APRIL 21, 1994 7:30 P.M.- 9:30 P.M.
