It's a pontification about possi bilities for the four S W C schools left out in the cold from the Big Eight Con ference's absorption of A&M, Texas, Texas Tech and Baylor. Welcome aboard the BS Di ener as we take a journey and explore the vast waters that harbor potential ports-of-call for Rice, Houston, SMU and TCU. Get out your compass and protractor to help me map out what may await these four un fortunate schools. Let's start with that pitiful program at Cougar High. What in the name of the Phi Slamma Jamma happened to this once-prominent haven for athletic competition? Gone are the glory days of 20-win seasons and NCAA tournament bids in basketball. 95-21 victories on the gridiron only occur in their opponent's favor these days. Things are pretty hopeless at the University of Houston. See Pathetic/ Page 4 Earning some Respect A&M shortstop plays to exceed expectations, to lead the No. 14 Lady Aggies to top By Stewart Doreen The Battalion R ecognized as one of the best shortstops in colle giate softball, Texas A&M softball senior All-American Jennifer McFalls says she plans to lead the Lady Aggies to another successful sea son. "It's a great honor to be con sidered among the top," McFalls adds, "and I'm excited about it." McFalls has led the No. 14 Lady Aggies to an 8-6 record this season. She has broken the A&M all- time career record for runs scored with 128 and in triples with 19. She is also close to breaking several more records for dou bles, total bases, RBI's, walks and stolen bases. The Lady Aggies won the In ter-Collegiate Classic in her hometown of Grand Prairie last weekend, and McFalls collected the Most Valuable Award. McFalls says she was happy to win the award and was excit ed to do it in front of her home town crowd. "It was really exciting for me. It was a great honor," she says. "I was more excited about win ning the tournament, though." She says she was not to wor ried about awards and records but wants to help the team any way she can. "We have 10 new players," she added. Outdoor Report Fresh or salt: A&M has club to catch fancy By Michael Glass Special to The Battalion You can bet that if there are two or more people with same in terest in a hobby, sport or recre ation, hen there has been an orga nization formed especially for it at Texas A&M. So it is with the sport of fish ing. In fact, there are two A&M groups open to anyone with an interest in fresh water or salt wa ter fishing. If bass fishing is your cup of tea , the newly formed Aggie An glers is the club for you. The club formed in Fall '93 and now has about 90 members, ranging from the avid fisherman to the occa sional relaxation seeker. This group holds bass fishing tournaments on nearby lakes every two week. Club president Jeff Shaeffer says the Aggie Anglers have scheduled seven inner-club tour naments for this semester. A public tournament is also scheduled for April 9 at Lake Bryan in the hopes that it will in crease local interest in the club. The next Aggie Anglers tour nament is Saturday at Houston Country Lake, located about 85 mile east of College Station.
