Rush The Battalion ■The Texas A&M baseball team, currently ranked fifth in the nation, opened its 1994 sea son with a weekend series sweep over the University of Texas-Pan American. min Saturday's second game, the finale of the series, it ap peared to be another blowout, but Pan American's bats would not remain silent as they put six runs up in the eighth inning. ■ Freshman outfielder Chad Allen, who went 7-12 in the se ries, ended the Bronc's chances of gaining the lead when he made a spectacular diving catch with two men on base. Allen was then called on to pitch the ninth inning where he retired three straight batters. Head coach Mark Johnson said he was pleased with the freshman's success. "It was nice to put our backs to the wall and have a freshman come through real well," John son said. "We really didn't want to put him out there with the score tied, but he responded well to it." The Longhorns got off to a good start, building a 15-5 lead in the game's first four minutes. Nine of Texas' first 11 points-came courtesy of three-pointers by freshman guard Reggie Freeman and junior guards Roderick Anderson and Ter rence Rencher. "When.they're on, they'll shoot from 28 feet," A&M senior forward Brett Murry said. Moe, an underdog American skiing just hours after resolution of the Tonya Harding debacle, left thousands of Norwegians in stunned silence when he won the men's downhill gold over local hero Kjetil Andre Aamodt. The American hockey team, looking for its first gold medal in 14 years, made up a two-goal third period deficit to salvage a 4-4 tie with France. A pair of flukey scores saved the Americans from defeat as first lady Hillary Clinton, waving an American flag, looked on with daughter Chelsea.
