By Jose de Jesus Ortiz The Battalion The Texas A&M men's and women's cross country teams will be without their best runners today when they travel to the Texas Na tional Golf Course in Willis to compete in the Cougar Open. A&M's best runners have already qualified for the Southwest Conference Championships in Dallas next Saturday, and the final spots will be fought for by the remaining runners at the Cougar Open. Last Saturday, both A&M teams finished seventh in the Charlie Thomas/ Texas A&M Invitational at A&M. Jerry Snider paced the Aggie men, finishing in 18th place for all mens runners - 121 of them. Michelle Truesda finished in 33rd place out of 124 women competitors. Brian Piper, Christian Hendrickson, David Huck, James Menze and William Wright will race for the final men's spot. Beth Ladd, Stacy Ramsower and Valerie Jones are vying for the last women's spot. A&M head cross country coach Ed Marcinkiewicz said that the team's performance in the meet was important, but that his main object will be to watch for the best individual Aggie finishers. A&M will run against Louisiana State, Baylor, Texas Southern, North Texas, Texas Arlington, Houston and Rice, but Marcinkiewicz said team placement was not the main goal for the :ies. "This is not a team meet - this is for a few runners that will try to go to the Southwest Conference meet," he said. "I just want to de termine the last spot (on both teams). I want to pick the last per son." While the men are unranked, the Texas A&M Lady Aggies are 8th-ranked in District IV, which is composed of schools from Texas, Oklahoma, Louisiana, Mississippi, Arkansas and New Mexico. A&M vs. Rice— A&M defenders look to stop Rice rushing in speedy Emanuel, newcomer Edmonds Page 5 Alternate Routes to Rice Stadium Parking Lot By Matthew J. Rush , The Battalion This Saturday's football game be tween Texas A&M and Rice University will two long streaks riding on its out come. Going into the game, the Aggies have posted 18 consecutive victories against Southwest Conference foes, while the Owls have not won a game against A&M in 13 years. To help Rice's chances of ending the streak, senior quar terback Bert Emanuel will try to keep the A&M defense on its toes with his versatile running and passing ability. Emanuel is currently the SWC's third- rated passer this year and was the con ference's Quarterback of the Year in 1992. Rice's running game features Emanuel and sophomore Yoncy Ed monds, who is replacing 1992 SWC co offensive player of the year Trevor Cobb at tailback. The Owls average 187.4 yards per game in the air but is most dangerous when they establish the run, averag ing 192.9 yards on the ground. I YFTyil The Aggies will have to V Vs! work hard to slow Emanuel, :: — the fastest quarterback in the SWC, and will be playing in front of Rice's homecoming crowd . Wente sets Lady Aggies for rematch with Baylor By Nick Georgandis l in - Kevin Ivy/THE Battalion Lady Aggie setter Suzy Wente (10) sets to junior outside hitter Anna Klasing (1 5) in A&M's Septem ber 22 home match against Texas Tech. The Battalion It happens dozens of times during a vol leyball match: A player dives after the ball, sacrificing her body to make the saving dig. The setter rushes over and lofts the ball per fectly into position for a high flying outside hitter to spike it down her opponent's throat. After the play, the hitter is applauded for her power, the diving player for her agility, and the setter? She settles back into the relative anonymi ty of being a team player. Sophomore setter Suzy Wente is the Lady Aggie volleyball team's ultimate team player and a very important reason why A&M enters Saturday's 7 p.m. match-up against Baylor with a 21-4 overall record, 5- 1 in the Southwest Conference. Wente pro vides the vital link between the digs and the spikes for A&M night after night, but said she does not mind not being in the spot light. "The hitters have always gotten the praise, but I like my role on the team," Wente said. "I feel like the quarterback sometimes - everyone doesn't rush the quarterback every time he throws a touchdown pass." The Lady Aggies are riding a five-match winning streak after defeating Texas Tech in Lubbock Wednesday night by scores of IS IS, 15-13, 15-9. This will be the Lady Aggies' second meet ing with the Lady Bears, hav ing beaten them solidly three weeks ago in Waco - 15-1,15-9 , 15-12. The Lady Bears are 17-6 (3- 2 in SWC play) and have one of their leading players, sophomore setter Cory Siverston back from a broken finger for tonight's game. Quietly, Wente is having one of the best seasons ever for an Aggie setter. She is the only player on the team to have played in every game of every match this season. Through Wednesday's game, Wente is ranked first in the SWC in assists per game and in total assists, and she is also tied for sixth in the conference in digs per game. Despite her success, Wente said she believes See Wente/Page 6 | J89d O' TEXAS A&M ATHLETIC EVENTS YOUR OPPORTUNITY FOR THE BEST IN COLLEGIATE SPORTS Students Use Your All Sports Pass At All Home Games Aggie Volleyball Aggie Football -j 993 1993 Sept. 4 LSU Sept. 1 8 Mo.
