"With a lot of colleges, unless you are taking the heavy 18-hour loads, there are few conceivaltle ways to finish in four years," she said. David Martin, an official in Measurement and Research De partment, agreed and said that if a student chooses to co-op, they can be assured of a-late graduation. In addition to the challenging A&M curriculum, many students are forced to help foot the bill for their education, said Wanda Wat son, an academic adviser in the general studies program. "What we're seeing at A&M is a reflection of today's job market," she said. "As parents lose their jobs that trickles down to the stu dents and they have to work to help put themselves through school. "A lot of students I am seeing have to work more than 20 hours, which means they probably can't take those heavy loads and still do well." she said, "So obviously it is going to take them longer to gradu ate." Watson said participation in ex tracurricular activities could play a role in whether a student graduates on time. "There is no clear cut answer for every student. Jfit depends on the individual major and student's characteristics," she said. "If you are involved in many on campus activities, it might be harder to fin ish on time. "What you choose to do, what you choose to become involved in and how well rounded you want to become are all factors that would determine why a student would or would not get their degree on time," she said. Price said students should not Bad corr Bay] W A< be alarmed if they find that anotha semester or another year is needed in order to complete their degrees "It wouldn't hurt most students to anticipate more than four yearc to complete their degrees," she said. "I don't think students need to push it. They need to take time to learn." Price said students should takes course load that suits their needs and allows them the time to e their college lives. "Students should enjoy them selves and enjoy learning," she said. "1 don't mean they shouldtoj tally kick back and waste time, ill you take what you can handle,yi will be a whole lot better off than if you push yourself so hard thalyoti get sick and have to dropoutof school. '^That's why I got out of busi ness, because I wasn't getting any help on this matter." However, Fiechtner said he did not remember saying that. Jakubczak said he was forced lo leave the University last spring be cause he was unable to raise his 0,9 GPA to the minimum 2.0. Jakubczak said he was told that he should have known he could withdraw for medical reasons. He said no academic official men tioned the option to him. Fiechtner said students can pre vent situations like this from occur ring by being responsible and knowing University regulations. "This seems like a recurring problem for freshmen and some thing needs to be done about it," tie said. "Freshmen have no idea! what's going on. You just don't have enough time in your schedule to read the University Regulations booklet from front to back 7 ' Dr. Betty Milburn, associated! rector for student counseling sen vices, saiti freshmen need to kno" what options are available when they encounter these types of situa tions. "At the first sign of any academl ic difficulty, a student should seel help immediately," she said. Stu dents also need to double check th administration's work because the sometimes make mistakes, she said. i
