Sports Friday, April 16,1993 The Battalion Page 7 Major league reform may be going too far T he sport of baseball is one of this nation's trea sures. Its long history of great moments and great players has made the game a favorite to both young and old. * Thig game, however, could be staring change in ; the face as an own er committee's meeting recently took place in Phoenix. Issues such as inter-league play, a new playbff system and divi sion expansion were discussed in Arizona during an off-season meet ing that took place in late February. The reason was two fold. One, baseball has developed a rather stale image for not changing its style over the years like that of professional basketball or football. New playoff systems for both sports, not to mention the numerous new free-agent rules, have been imple mented to spice up their leagues in the recent past. Second, a longing to hold more baseball fans' attention during the post-season is needed for purposes of revenue for both the league and the respective teams. All of which points to the real monster of profes sional athletics as'we know it - mon- e y- Where does a true fan of baseball start in disputing every one of the meeting's agendas? RUSH Sports Writer A&M recruit to add hometown flavor By DAVID WINDER The Battalion Tyler Junior College forward Joe Wilbert signed a national letter-of-intent to play basketball at Texas A&M Tues day, making him the fourth recruit signed by the Aggies this season. His signing adds to an already youth ful team and head coach Tony Barone's second impressive recruiting class. Earlier this season the Aggies signed Jimmy Smith of Victoria, Anthony Burks of Fort Worth Dunbar, and Chris Pul liams of San Antonio MacArthur/Fork Union Military Academy. Wilbert averaged 19.3 points and nine rebounds last season as a sophomore, leading TJC to a second-place finish at the Texas state junior college tournament and earning second-team All-Texas Eastern Athletic Conference honors. Considered one of the top five Juco prospects in Texas, Wilbert scored 74 points in the na tional tournament and was named to the all-tournament team. Before entering TJC, Wilbert was a standout player at Bryan High School, where he led the Vikings to the regional finals before falling to the eventual state champions Duncanville. Barone said that Wilbert's juco experi ence gives him an advantage. "The reason you sign a kid out of ju nior college is because you feel he can make a difference as soon he gets here," Barone said. "He's multi-faceted - he can play either inside or outside. "He will bring a lot of athleticism and defense to our team" After improving from a 6-22 in the 1991-92 season to a record of 10-17 last season, the Aggies are planning to make a See Recruits/Page 8 Number-one Aggies prepared for upstart Baylor squad CRAIG FOX/The Battalion A&M shortstop Robert Harris fires to first after completing the rest of the Aggies will look to maintain their top ranking this front end of a double play earlier this season. By MICHAEL PLUMER The Battalion The biggest series of the year for the Texas A&M baseball team will take place today and Saturday when the Aggies play the Baylor Bears. From now on, though, every confer ence game will be important as league teams take their best shot at the number- one ranked Aggies (38-5, 8-1). A&M third baseman Robert Lewis stressed the importance of not overlooking any re maining opponents. "Every game we play is going to big because of where we are ranked," Lewis said. "Teams naturally are going to want to beat the Aggies, but now this (being No. 1) will give them extra incentive." Baylor will get its first shot to dethrone the Aggies tonight at 6:00 in Waco. In a unique format, the series will switch back to College Station for Saturday's double- header, which begins at 4:00 in the after noon. The Bears, though, are no strangers to battling the top-ranked team in the coun try. Last weekend, Baylor took two out of three against the University of Texas, including a sweep of Saturday's double- header by scores of 7-4 and 8-6 that knocked the Longhorns out of the num ber-one position. It was the first twinbill for Baylor against Texas since 1985.
