Friday, March 26,1993 The Battalion Page 5 Man sneaks into Davidian compound THE ASSOCIATED PRESS HOUSTON - Neighbors of the Houston man who scrambled past armed federal agents into the Branch Davidian cult, said Thurs day he is a helpful, religious loner. Louis Anthony Alaniz, 24, lives in a trailer home north of Hous ton. Family members shooed away reporters who gathered there after federal agents in Waco announced his Wednesday night scamper past them into the cult led by doomsday prophet David Koresh. “I have nothing to do with what he's doing. I didn't even know that this was going to hap pen," his mother Anita Young said. "I have nothing else to say. Now get off my property." FBI agent Bob Ricks said Thursday that Alaniz was a mem ber of the Assembly of God church, not a member of Koresh's cult, which has been in an armed standoff with authorities for 26 days. "He was described as a reli gious fanatic by his own mother and is there in search of whatever truths that Mr. Koresh may be able to impart to him," Ricks said. Jack Linney, executive secre tary for the Assemblies of God South Texas District Council, said he had never heard of Alaniz. R.P. Holtz, who runs a vehicle inspection station in Alaniz's neighborhood, said he walked by several times a day. "He's kind of an oddball, walk up the street snapping his fin gers," Holtz said. "Tie's a nice fel la, seems like he is." Ben Garcia, who runs an auto trim shop nearby, said Alaniz dressed well. "I didn't know anything about him being a religious person at all," Garcia said. "I never saw him walking with anyone, he was al ways by himself." Neighbor Fred Hayes said, "He would help me put my alternator on my car once in awhile. He's a good person, a religious person. He talked to me about the Lord all the time, everything like that." Railey tried to kill wife for lover, attorneys say Police car strikes, kills teen THE ASSOCIATED PRESS DALLAS — Police are investigating the death of a teen-ager struck by a police car. Coby Underkofler, 13, was killed at 7:40 p.m. Tuesday as he and two friends crossed West Davis Street. The accident occurred in an area where the street was lighted on one side and dark on the other, police said. Sgt. Michael Roberts, accident and investigation supervisor, said the impact killed the boy instantly and severed his leg below the knee. The boy's backpack was embedded in the car's windshield. Officer Alfred Nunez, driver of the police car, was treated at Methodist Medical Center and released. Michael Silleon, his partner, was discharged Wednesday from Baylor University Medical Center. 'T have a lot of empathy for the family of the victim, and I have a lot of empathy for the officer," Roberts said. "He is extremely upset over the incident." Big Event Continued from Page 1 unselfish and r shows what the Ag gie Spirit is all about." Newbury said Big Event bene fits the community and the Uni versity. "It is good for the community and the University to come to gether and get to know each other while cleaning up the communi ty," she said. Assistant director of Big Event, Molly Linscott, a junior biomed ical science major, said Big Event is a chance for students to put a lot back into the community be fore they graduate. "Some students just take and don't give back," she said, "Big Event gives them that chance." THE ASSOCIATED PRESS SAN ANTONIO - State attor neys said Thursday they believe former Dallas minister Walker Railey tried to kill his wife so he could run off with his lover. Chief prosecutor Cecil Emerson also told the court that a suicide note by Railey, while expressing no guilt, "is as close to an admis sion as you can get without sign ing a confession." Countered defense lawyer Doug Mulder: "There is nothing confessional in that note." Railey, 45, formally denied the attempted murder charges Thurs day and the state called its first witness Billie Jo Nicolai, the vic tim's elderly mother. With the jury out, Nicolai lis tened to telephone messages recorded on a home answering machine the night of the assault and identified the caller as Railey. Mobile phone records and those recordings form the crux of the state's fragile and largely cir cumstantial case against Railey. On April 21, 1987, Peggy Rai ley, now 44, was choked uncon scious and left to die on the garage floor of the couple's subur ban Dallas home. She lies today in what doctors say is a irreversible vegetative state. Little more than a week after the attack, Railey locked himself in his hospital suite; scribbled out a bizarre suicide note and took an overdose of tranquilizers. After recovering, he surren dered his church credentials, gave up custody of his two young chil dren, fled to California with his mistress and tried unsuccessfully to divorce his wife. Railey's lover, Dallas psycholo gist Lucy Papillon, is expected to be called by the state as hostile witness. State District Judge Pat Mc Dowell ruled Thursday the jury could hear evidence about Rai ley's suicide attempt. Free LSAT Seminar!
