The Gourman report, pub lished by Dr. Jack Gourman through National Education Stan dards, ranks 228 leading business schools based on a variety of fac tors. Criteria included information from students, former students. faculty and job recruiters. Fund ing, fields of study offered and the school's facilities are also focuses of the ranking process. Dr. Dan Robertson, associate dean for academic programs for the business school, said one rea son why A&M jumped 16 places was because it was under-ranked in the previous report. "The ranking shows that there is a growing awareness of the quality of our program," he said "It also shows the quality of stu dents has increased." With over 5,000 students, the undergraduate program is the fifth largest in the country; Com paratively, Texas A&M University has the third largest enrollment in the world, with almost 43,000 stu dents. "Many parents use this report and other data on the business school to help them determine where to send their children to school," Robertson said. Les Fiechtner, director of un dergraduate programs in the col lege of Business Administration, said he believes freshmen who are interested in coming to A&M will look at the ranking somewhat, but more so at the campus. The number of jobs in the city tied to Mexi can trade will increase from 171,000 now to 254,000 in 1995 if the North American Free Trade Agreement is ratified and other trade liberalization steps continue, Perryman said Tuesday. That number will grow to 377,000 by 2000 under the same conditions, he said. "A lot of the goods that we talk about for export purposes are made here," Perryman said. "A lot of the service companies that are exporting to Mexico are based here. While the goods pass through the border cities . . . you end up with the overall effect being bigger where the stuff is made." Perryman said Gains from free trade will be felt in all 28 Texas cities he studied. The most significant will be in manufactur ing and distribution centers such as Dallas, Fort Worth, Houston, San Antonio, Austin, Tyler, Sherman, Killeen-Temple, Longview- Marshall. The study showed that cities along the Mexican border also stand to benefit great ly. "The key thing is where most of the goods are made and central distribution points," Per ryman said, noting many have assumed most of the trade gains would be along the border. The study made no "radical" assumptions about policy changes or infrastructure projects not already on the books, Perryman said. In addition, the study only tracked growth from the current economic base of a city rather than projecting likely relocations. And it took into account effects that are likely to be nega tive, such as loss of textile or labor-intensive farm jobs.
