"We build with reinforced con crete and concrete blocks instead of timber, so the damage is a lot worse," said Imam. Since the earthquake occurred in the afternoon, many children died when their school buildings collapsed on top of them. In the poorer neighborhoods, where most of the damage oc curred, Imam said the structures were old and considered unfit for habitation in the first place. They were mainly occupied by some of the many poor Egyptians who mi grated to Cairo. Imam added that the death toll could have been much worse. There are more than 500 dead in Cairo, a city of 14 million, while San Francisco, a city of less than a million, had 56 dead in t earthquake. Considering that San Frans has building codes and! one-tenth the population of Qi the quake was not as bat could have been, said Imam.
