It's a good thing, because his interception Sunday put the Dallas Cowboys back into the NFC East leadership. Horton's interception with 3:27 to play helped Dallas beat back a late Kansas City threat Sunday and the Cowboys rode back to first place with a 17-10 victory over the Chiefs. Dallas (5-1), which has won 10 straight home games, moved ahead of Philadelphia, which lost to Washington, 16-12. Kansas City dropped to 4-3 with all three losses on the road at Houston, Denver and Dallas. "We were put to the test to day," Dallas coach Jimmy John son said. Bir- den to intercept Dave Krieg's pass on the Dallas 8. Horton had been inserted on the Cowboys' pass de fense packages. "I took my demotion like a man," Horton said. "I accepted it with humility and with a determi nation I was going to get my job back. I believe you can take things with class and dignity even though I felt like an outcast and a leper." It saved the day for a Dallas team that went into a second-half offensive gridlock. The Cowboys could manage only a 39-yard field goal by Lin Elliott. Kansas City got its best chance to tie the game when rookie Dale Carter took a pass away from Michael Irvin at the Dallas 47. Harvey Williams gained 10 yards and Krieg completed an 11- yard pass to put the Chiefs into position for the tie. But Krieg, under heavy pres sure from Charles Haley, threw the ball in Horton's direction. "Krieg was looking the other way and I kind of stepped in there and beat the receiver (Birden) to the ball," Horton said. "I believe he was trying to throw an out." Krieg said Horton closed on the ball faster than he expected. "I guess I just didn't get enough on the ball," Krieg said. "Their defense played great. You have to make a big play when vou get down there where we were." Kansas City coach Marty Schottenheimer said the Cow boys' success on offense and de fense was "disappointing." "We didn't tackle Emmitt Smith and didn't make the play when we had a chance," Schotten heimer said. "Dallas made the plays. We didn't. If we play the way we are capable of playing, we can win."
