Sports Thursday, September 26, 1991 The Battalion PK Anthony Andro Sportswriter Tragedies bring sports back to reality J ames Glenn was just a student like everyone else. He went to class, had his friends, and did his own things. He was a freshman at A&M. He probably encountered the same prob lems everyone else faced. Just 19 years old, Glenn was a 5'11", blonde-headed kid who proba bly wouldn't stand out in a crowd. Glenn also played football. A walk-on kicker from League City, Texas, Glenn was just a regular student who played football. Glenn died yesterday before football practice. Now, those people close to him must deal with his death. A lot of people have the percep tion that athletes are above all the problems that the common, everyday person faces. Glenn's death proves this to be false. Any me remember Flo Hyman? Hyman was a gold medalist for the 1984 United States Olympic volley ball team. She died of Marfan's Syn drome. People in the sportsworld were shocked. Why can't people understand athletes have the same problems ev eryone else does? Just last year, Baylor freshman lineman John Karkoska died just be fore a football game against Sam Houston State after he had been in See Andro/ Page 8 Lady Aggies win fourth straight By Anthony Andro The Battalion The Texas A&M volleyball team sur vived a scare from the University of Texas at Arlington last night and pulled off a five-game match victory over the Movin' Mavs at G. Rollie White Colise um. The Lady Aggies defeated UTA 11- 15,15-7,15-8, 12-15, 15-9 to win their fourth straight match. The Aggies im prove to 8-6 on the season. UTA falls to 3-9. Coach A1 Givens was pleased with the team's performance. "I thought it was a great match," Givens said. "It was like a chess game." In game one, the Lady Aggies were never able to get the ball rolling. UTA led 10-5 before the Lady Aggies mounted a late surge and pulled ahead 11-10. But UTA closed out game one with four straight points to take a one game lead. The Lady Aggies rebounded to win game two 15-7. After jumping to an early 9-0 lead because of unforced errors by the Movin' Mavs and the serving of freshman Karen Richards, the Lady Aggies had a lapse in play as UTA closed the gap to 10-7. Sophomore middle blocker Kim Mitchell woke the team back up with a pair of spikes and a block as the Lady Aggies never looked back. Game three was played out similarly to the first game with both teams going back and forth until it was tied 8-8. The Lady Aggies used the serving of sophomore Amy Kisling to pull ahead 13-8 and, the Aggies won the game 15-8 with an Elizabeth Edmiston spike. UTA controlled game four and held off a late Aggie charge to win the game 15-12. After a 6-6 tie, the Movin' Mavs ran off six straight points to take a 12-6 lead. The Aggies cut the lead to 12-14 be fore they lost. Givens was confident in his team go ing into the fifth and final game. "I really thought when we went to game five that the girls thought they could win," he said. "We needed a win Lady Aggie Amy Kisling spikes the ball past a UTA defender during a five-game match like that." Game five was played with a rally point scoring system, in which every side out results in a point. The Lady Aggies never trailed in the final game and won easily, 15-9. Givens said he was pleased with the team's efforts after a long week. KARL STOLLEIS/ The Battalion Wednesday night at G. Rollie White Coliseum. A&M has won four straight and is 8-6. "This was a tough test for us," he said. "We have had a week where we were just mentally overloaded." Although the match was plagued with inconsistencies, Givens will take the victory. "Winners find a way to win," he said. "It doesn't have to be pretty." Smith targets next record By Chris Whitley TIte Battalion No one in Southwest Conference history has had more interceptions than Kevin Smith. No one, but Kevin Smith, is more relieved that it's over. All the press, all the hype, and all the waiting ended when Smith picked off a T.J. Rubley pass in the fourth quarter Saturday against Tulsa to break the elusive record. The steal, which broke the record set by SMU's Russell Carter and TCU's Ronald Fraley, was the 19th in his star- studded career at Aggie cornerback, and the first of his senior season. Kevin Smith However, he endured a long, hard slump in between tying and setting the conference mark. "If you look back, the Rice game (Oct. 27, 1990) was the last intercep tion I had," Smith sard. "I've never been that long without an intercep tion, even in high school." Smith realizes the reason for his cold streak was his concentration on the record, and not the receiver. "I just got away from the funda mentals," Smith said. "Trying to look at the quarterback too long, and play ing the ball instead of intercepting it. "But now, I can go back to the ba sics, and really watch film more. Go back to the things that I really haven't done as much as I did before, and tack on to the record." Smith's interception was the high- See Smith/ Page 8 College isn’t always easy, but shopping at ESckerdis! t ■; M I . f— — — — — — — — — — — — - At Eckerd, we’ve done our liomework on convenient shopping.
