Instead of trying to cram more than 40 years of Meravich's life into an hour and a half, the movie focuses on one basketball season. The season is chosen from his eighth-grade year in school, when he played for the varsity high school team. Instead of focusing on his college days where he was the all-time leading college scorer, averaging 44 points per game, writer-director Frank Schroeder expands on a turning point in Meravich's life when he really had to prove himself for the first time as the short, young guy surround ed by seniors. . The film takes place in Mer avich's hometown, Clemson, South Carolina, in 1959, where his father. Press Meravich, is the col lege basketball coach and a retired professional player. Thirteen-year- old Pete looks up to his father as a guiding force in his life (and fu ture life). Meravich is played by Adam Guier who is short on acting abili ty but can really handle a basket ball. The performance by Pete's dad (Nick Benedict) is much bet ter, playing the inspiration to his son. The biggest problem I have with the movie is that it feels like an ABC after-school special - it's full of inspirational and motiva tional speeches. And there's a number of sequences where Pete and the team are shown practicing with a cheesy near-rock sound track in the background. One good point is it avoids a typical Hollywood ending (then again, it is based on a true story, so the ending is more than likely based on fact). The film is pretty good if you are interested in this legendary basketball player's early inspira tions, or if you are in the mood for some good, squeaky clean family entertainment. Overall it has few elements that apply to a broad au dience of a college age. Previewed indeos are courtesy of 2-Day Video. 1 'Hoosiers' Watching "Pistol" remindec me of a movie that came outir: 1986, "Hoosiers," which stars Gene Hackman, Dennis Hoppe: and Bara bam Hershey. Whereas "Pistol" is abou: one boy's struggles to makeil I against the odds, "Hoosiers" is I about an old coach's struggleic [ bring a small, conservative! town into the future. Set in 1951 Hickory, Indi ana, Norman Dale (Hackman)is the new coach who has to try to whip an old, tired town into new ways of playing basketball But the town doesn't agree with the coach's methods and almost removes him from the position. In Indiana, they take their basketball more seriousiv than Texans take their football, especially in small towns. Director David Anspaugh keeps the story and game footage tight, making a realistic and well-done story of high school basketball, that has as much to do with the concept of change (of a town and of a per son) as it does the game itself, -I.D Around Town Music Information is provided by the in dividual nightclubs and is subject to change.
