Sports Tuesday, September 10, 1991 The Battalion Page 7 Chris Whitley Sportswriter Jackie's wrath lives on at Mississippi St. J ackie Sherrill was waiting for last Sat urday to happen. He waited through his messy dis missal from Texas A&M. He waited through two years of only being able to watch football on television. He waited when he took the head coaching job at Mississippi State for Sept. 7 to arrive. Then he came back with a vengeance. His Mississippi State crew, tradition ally the doormat of the Southeast Con ference having posted only one winning season in the previous nine years, showed up the Longhorns on all sides of the ball to win, 13-6, and knock Texas off The Associated Press poll. It had been too long since Sherrill had beaten Texas. At Texas A&M, he won five consecutive games over the Bevo Boys - an unprecedented achieve ment for an Aggie head coach. However, when the NCAA came knocking on A&M's door and the stories of corruption from the football program came out, Sherrill left in disgrace. He took a two-year hiatus from foot ball and was, for the most part, not heard from. But he was there lurking. One can almost imagine him sitting at his car dealership in Baytown with a pad and a pencil scouting out teams on television. He had left football, but football had not left him. Enter Mississippi State. They looked to Sherrill for the path to SEC treasures. See Whitley/ Page 8 Cross country teams cross finish line first By Anthony Andro The Battalion The Texas A&M cross country team won the Charlie Thomas Invitational, its first meet, Monday at the Texas A&M golf course. The men's team, competing against Stephen F. Austin State University, won 18 to 42, while the women's team defeat ed the University of Houston by a score of 24-31. The score is determined the the order of the top five finishers on each team. The higher the place of finish, the lower the score. Cross country coach Ed Marcinkiewicz said he was happy with the teams' performance. "I'm very pleased, particularly with the guys" said Marcinkiewicz. "We had some guys like Drew Stooksberry and Ja son Reed who ran phenomenally." Juniors Scott Garvin and Ross Stooksberry, running a four mile race, tied for first place in the men's division with a time of 19 minutes, 42 seconds. Marcikiewicz said he knew he could count on his two leaders. "Our two veterans performed as ex pected," he said. "They demonstrated the type of leadership you expect from veteran runners. "They ran relaxed and will be major factors in the conference race." Freshmen Ricky Gallegos and Matt Priest finished fourth and fifith for the Aggies with times of 20:04 and 20:07, re spectively. "I was pleasantly surprised with the guys team," Marcinkiewicz said. "We had a number of people perform above my expectations.'' In the two-mile women's race, junior Melissa Weaver crossed the finish line first with a time of 10:43. Stacey Ware and Connie Hand finished second and third with times of 10:43 and 11:01. "The girl's team was almost a carbon copy of the guy's," Marcinkiewicz said. Marcinkiewicz said he was especial ly happy with the top three finishers. "They ran intelligently and within themselves," he said. "All three are po tential top ten finishers at the conference meet." Two freshmen, Beth Ladd and Men’s cross country team members Scott Garvin and Drew Stooksberry cross finish line together during the Charlie Thomas Christine McKinney, also pleased the coach. "Our two freshmen ran well but had i.v>UOS» i vOojC i HUY NGUYEN/The Battalion Invitational held on the A&M golf course Monday. Both the men’s and women's teams won their meets. to battle the heat and humidity," he said. The team's next meet is Monday against Baylor in Waco. A&M moves up one spot in poll From Staff and Wire Reports The Texas A&M football team moved up one notch in the Associated Press Top 25 football poll released Monday. The Aggies, ranked at No. 21 for the last two weeks, jumped to No. 20. A&M is preparing for this Saturday's show down with Louisiana State University at Kyle Field. The Tigers lost to Georgia last Saturday, 31-10, and are unranked. A&M is one of three Southwest Con ference teams in the poll. The University of Houston, 1-0, stayed at No. 10 follow ing an idle weekend. The Cougars will play second-ranked University of Miami Thursday night in Miami. Baylor entered this week's Top 25 at No. 23 following a 27-7 victory over the University of Texas-El Paso. The Bears played at Colorado next Saturday. The Texas Longhorns dropped out of the list after being ranked at No. 13 last week.
