Mississippi St. (Starkville) Saturday Texas...The Longhorns are the defending Southwest Conference champions after a banner season in 1990 which saw them go 10-2. The only downer to the 'Horn's season was how they ended it. Texas was trounced by the Miami Hurricanes 46- 3 in the Cotton Bowl on Janury 1. The last time the Longhorns had a winning season in 1987 (7-5), they promptley responded with a losing record the following season (4-7). The Longhorns return five starters on offense including junior quarterback Peter Gardere and sophomore running back Butch Hadnot. On defense the Longhorns return eight starters, including three on their defensive line which is one of the best in college football. Mississippi State... The Bulldogs welcome former A&M head coach Jackie Sherrill to do a little house cleaning, and hopefully for Mississippi fans, he brought a bulldozer. The Bulldogs are coming off a 5-6"record in 1990 and managed only one victory in Southeast Conference play. It has been five years since the 'Dogs won more than two SEC games. In their season opener last weekend State beat Cal St.- Fullerton, 47-3. key matchup...Pre-season all-American defensive end Shane Dronett, tackles Tommy Jeter and James Patton and end Bo Robinson make up one of the best defensive lines in college football. The Bulldogs were the ninth most productive offense in the SEC Last season out of 10 conference teams. The Bulldogs' offensive line has to play the game of its life to keep the 'Horns from chalking up their first victory of the season. Southern Methodist VS. ArkansaS(Little Rock) Saturday 7:00p.m. SMU... Tom Rossley begins his first year as head coach of the Mustangs after short stint with the Atlanta Falcons as an assistant. The foundation has been laid at SMU and now it's Rossley's job to take them to a bowl game. It's a realistic goal, but may be four to five years away. SMU returns nine starter on offense and 11 on defense. Junior quarterback Mike Romo has a chance to become one of the conferences all-time leading passers. Arkansas... TThe Razorbacks go into Saturday's game after being trounced by Miami 31-3 he Razorbacks begin their final season in the SWC before moving to the SEC. Quarterback Quinn Grovey, the conferences' second all-time leading rusher, is gone. Opposing defenders are resting better. Arkansas experienced a dismal 1990 season, going 3-8 overall and 1-8 in conference. Jack Crowe, beginning his second year as head coach, will field six returning starters on offense and eight on defense. Their one conference victory came against the Mustangs, but don't expect the the 'Backs to be as bad this year as in '90. How can they be worse? key mathup... This game doesn't have national or even conference importance of any real measure, but it is a chance for SMU to shaow they're here to play. The Arkansas defense must shut down Romo and receiver Jason Wolfe to keep the Mustangs from getting into the game emotionally, line... Arkansas by 16.5 Baylor VS. Texas-El Paso (Waco) Saturday 7.00 p.m. Baylor... The Bears possess the most talent laiden team in the conference, but their inability to win the 'big game' may keep them from the Cotton Bowl. On offense, the Bears return nine starters, including sophomore fullback Robert Strait and guards John Turnpaugh and Monte Jones. The two are pre-season All-Southwest Conference and will make running up the middle a trademark of Baylor’s for the '91 season. Baylor will suit up four returnees from their '91 defense. Senior defensive ends Robin Jones and Santana Dotson anchor a defensive line that is only second to Texas in talent and big play ability. UTEP... The Miners are in the process of converting from a pro-style attack to an option running game and they're not really prepared to do it. Quarterback Mike Perez has almost no experience as an option quarterback and fullback Patrick Bailey averaged just two yards per carry last season. The Miners lost their best receiver Reggie Barrett to the NFL draft, but UTEP still has a formidable receiving corps with Glenn Bishop and Ansel Littlejohn. key matchup... Teaff and his Bears shouldn't have any problems with UTEP, but their list of all-American candidates can either make or break their season this weekend. Santana Dotson, a defensive end, is an all-American and Outland Trophy candidate. Offensive guards John Turnpaugh and Monte Jones are sure bets at all-Southwest Conference players and each has a shot at all-American honors, line... Baylor by 19 other conference games: Texas Christian vs. New Mexico (Ft. Worth) Saturday 7:00 p.m. Texas Tech vs. Cal State-Fullerton (Lubbock) Saturday 7:00 p.m. National Outlook game to watch: Washington VS. Stanford (Stanford) Washington... The Huskies, ranked No. 4 by the Associated Press, has the easiest schedule of any team in the top 5 five, but the Huskies always seem to drop a game to one of the lesser Pac-10 teams when it counts. Washington finished last season by crushing Iowa, 46-34, in the Rose Bowl and will field 16 returning starters from that team which went 8-1. But the Huskies will take the field minus starting quarterback Mark Brunell. The Huskies defense, which is one of the best in the country, will have to pick up the slack. Stanford... The Cardinals are coming off a 5-6 season which saw them finish in a tie for sixth place in the Pac-10. To Stanford's advantage this season is the fact that they return 18 starters from last season, along with All-American and Heisman Trophy candidate Glyn Milburn. Milbum, a junior, is the best all-purpose back in college football since Raghib Ismail. key matchup... Stanford offensive tackle Bob Whitfield and guard Brain Cassidy will try to contain Washington's mammoth defense. Huskies' defensive tackle Steve Emtman is on most pre-season All-American teams and will be joined Saturday by one of the best linebacking units in the country, line... Washington by 7.5 Crunch-time players... Russell White., TB, California... This junior from California may be the best ball-carrier in the country and returns as one of the top rushers in the Pac-10 last year. His abilities and the Golden Bears' talent will be tested in their conference duel with Washington. Levon Kirkland, LB, Clemson.. Clemson has managed to turn out a number of great linebackers the last couple of years, but Kirkland is the best of the bunch. He should have a field day in the Tigers game agsinst Appalachian State Saturday. Rodney Blackshear, WR, Texas Tech...The Red Raiders have had troubles competing in the Southwest Conference the las couple of years but a Heisman Trophy would please the fans in Lubbock. Blackshear is second only to Glyn Miilbun in overall ability. Shane Dronett, DE, Texas.. Is this Longhorn really the best defensive lineman in college football like e lot of people think? He’ll have a chance to show his wares against Mississippi State in the ’Horns opener. Steve Emtman, DL, Washington.. At 6'4'' 280 lbs, this junior is one of the finest defensive linemen in the country and will surely battle for the Outland Trophy Award. He should be challenged this weekend by two formidable Stanford linemen. Carl Pickens, WR, Tennesse... Pickens is part of a long list of great Tennesse receivers, and he may be the best yet. At 6'3", 200 lbs., the junior possesses blazing speed and a knack for finding the endzone. other games on tap around the country this weekend: Virginia at Maryland Cincinnati at Penn State Indiana at Notre Dame Louisiana State at Georgia Tulane at Florida State Brigham Young at UCLA Don't be a cultural dodo, stop by and see us at the VISUAL ARTS BOOTH during Open House Sunday, Sept. 8 4-8 p.m. in the MSC If we don't see you there, we'll see you at our 1 st meeting Monday, Sept. 9 8:30-9:30 p.m. in Rudder-Room 501 POST OAK MALL A Amazing Aggie Access, Crunchy Corn Dogs c Colorful p Cookies 0( 0 Glitzy Gifts Galore ^ ||hardware Ifeii; Kid’s Clothes Burgers & Banking ^ A yffik Foley's & j Ml’ Food Court SS8» WJJCPenney & Italian Cuisine tjf & Jazzy Jewelry 'jfib Loads^ of ‘•mOL R Mon-Sat 10am - 9pm Sun ■12:30- 5:30pm Famous Labels Plentiful Parking Places & Marvelous p Merchants W™ 07165 I never a dull moment Rolexes & Refrigerators Sears & Service Merchandise V Victorias Secret & video games Post Oak Molly Q Quality! ^ ,2..
