The ninth grade student, Raul Calvo of Donna, died shortly after the shooting, said Lt. Gilbert Gonza lez of the Donna Police Department. “What happened was he jokingly pulled out a weapon and he said ‘Let’s play Russian roulette,’ and he put one of the bullets in there,” Gon zalez said. “He attempted to spin the cylinder and the gun went off.” Gonzalez said a single .38-caliber bullet struck the student in the right side of the neck. Officials say Calvo was pronounced dead at Knapp Medical Center in Weslaco at 2:14 p.m. “All indications show that it was an accident,” said Gonzalez, who in terviewed several of the students who witnessed the incident. School principal Gene Kirby said Calvo was a football player known to have a cheerful disposition. Kirby said the shooting produced a somber mood among the school’s 2,000 students, who were informed of the incident via the public address system. “When the bells rang for dis missal, it was very quiet in the halls,” Kirby said. The shooting occurred about 1:25 p.m. as the sixth-period biology class was beginning, Kirby said. Police said Calvo was in the back of the room standing with his back to the teacher when he pulled out the .38-caliber revolver and started play ing with it. roulette School officials counseled it other 19 students who were in theli ology class. Police said they werei vestigating who owns the gunar.; how Calvo obtained it. Acting Police Chief Antonio L pez said he could not recall anypn vious incidents at the school that.: : volved guns. Calvo was the sixth Donna re dent to die from gunshot woun: within the past two weeks. Officials believe the five othc deaths were drug-related.
