Page 4D The Battalion Monday, August 27,191 Pa* Chamber Series offers diversity with classical music By Todd Stone popular chamber music From Mozart to Dvorak and from strings to woodwinds — This year’s University Chamber Series will pro vide a diverse range of classical mu sic. The series is sponsored by the College of Liberal Arts and the mu sic section of the Department of Phi losophy and Humanities. Traditionally, the Chamber Series consists of five shows performed during the fall and spring semesters. Pianist Lori Sims will kick off the Chamber Series Oct. 1. This year, however, there will be a special bonus organ recital on Nov. 15 at A&M Methodist Church at Northgate. Admission is free for the recital featuring John Walker — an estab lished concert organist and music di rector at The Riverside Church in New York City and chairman of the Organ Department at the Manhat tan School of Music. Walker performs throughout the United States and Europe, and his latest recordings feature composi tions by Tournemire, Lesur, Mulct and Dupre. The Western Arts Trio, consisting of A&M’s coordinator of music Werner Rose (piano), David Tomatz (cello) and Brian Hanly (violin), will perform Antonin Dvorak’s “F Minor Trio” Nov. 26. Other A&M faculty and guests will be invited to per form. The Trio is an internationally group. They perform a wide range of music from traditional works by Beethoven and Brahms to music by many twen tieth century composers. This year’s Chamber Series will also showcase compositions by A&M’s Dr. Peter Lieuwen. The critically-acclaimed Lauren- tian String Quartet will perform a Lieuwen piece that has never been played in Bryan-College Station on Feb. 15 in Rudder Forum. The Quartet will also perform works by Mozart, Beethoven and Haydn. Further, Quintessence, a profes sional woodwind quintet, has com missioned Lieuwen to write a piece for its March 27 performance. The quintet combines flair and humor into a diversified repertoire of con temporary and traditional music. The Brazos Symphonetta, an ex tension of the Brazos Valley Sym phony Orchestra, will perform va rious opera selections by Mozart, including solo arias, duets and quar tets Jan 28. BVSO conductor Franz Krueger will conduct. The all-Mozart performance cele brates Mozart’s commemorative year, 1991. The composer died al most 200 years ago in late 1791. All Chamber Series performances begin at 8 p.m. A series ticket pack age for all shows is $20 for students and $30 for non-students. Tickets for individual shows are $5 for students and $8 for non-stu dents. Tickets can be purchased at the MSC Box Office. Brown Bag shows back for fall By Todd Stone If you want to add a new di mension to your Wednesday lunch breaks, Brown Bag perfor mances will continue Sept. 5 in the music room of the Academic Building. From barber shop quartets to brass quintets, the Brown Bag shows offer a variety of musical and artistic genres. Each show be gins at noon every Wednesday of the fall and spring semesters, ex cluding holidays. The Brown Bag performances are sponsored by the College of Liberal Arts, the music section of the Department of Philosophy and Humanities and the OPAS Stark Series. Admission is free for all shows, and of course, all at tending are welcome to eat their lunch during the performances. A wide range of performers, including International artists, as well as talented high school stu dents, participate in Brown Bag specials. The Aggie Players have enter tained with excerpts from plays, and advanced music studems from schools such as the Univer sity of Houston and Univenityol Texas have also performed. All Bi own Bag performances are broadcast live on KAMI, 90.9 FM. Werner Rose, A&M’s coordi nator of music, said the goal of Brown Bag concerts is to provide a “little musical dessert.” Certainly, the variety of musi cians is impressive. Pianists, violi nists, piano trios and singers and chorus’ have entertained at die Brown Bag lunch. Rose said he hopes to get a string quartet to perform this year. Continuing with the recruit ment of international artists, asa- rod player from India is sched uled to perform Sept. 12. Asarod is a string instrument played with a bow, and the sarod player should provide an interesting presentation of Indian music. Brown Bag performances be gan in October of 1988.
