Thursday, December 10,1987/The Battalion/Page 7 Residents (Continued from page 1) many students who sign the con tracts do not understand this. How ever, he said, the housing office con stantly is reviewing the dorm contracts to help students better un derstand their rights. “We do allow students to keep their belongings in the dorms over Christmas, but it’s really not their room,” Murray said. He said students whose rooms are assigned for the holidays can move their belongings into their suite- mates’ room, take their belongings home with them or leave them in the room. Angie Rener, Keathley Hall first floor resident director and junior psychology major, said she does not have many negative feelings about the program. She said the balcony dorms are the easiest place for the students to live because the doors open directly to the outside and the rest of the building can be secured by locking the stairway^. Debbie Owensby of student af fairs said students have until Mon day to sign up for interim housing. She said if Keathley residents do not hear from her, then their rooms have not been assigned. Residents can call her beginning Friday at 4 p.m. to find out if their rooms will be used. One would be the private ceremony for the commis sioning of officers the weekend of graduation. The whole Corps tradi tionally attends this ceremony but many students leaving after finals would not attend, he said. Black said that he in no way be lieves the faculty set out to break tra ditions and he thinks a major part of their decision was to keep gradual- Camp ing seniors from skipping the last part of their courses. Dr. Richard Shumwayjr., speaker of the Faculty Senate and professor of agricultural economics, said some of the reasoning behind having se nior finals was the adverse psycho logical effect on underclassmen and nongraduating seniors who had to take final exams. “There is a psychological problem created to begin with to get through finals,” Shumway said. “This prob lem is compounded many times over when a portion of a class doesn’t have to take finals and disappears from the classroom. We understand these anxieties; they are real and troublesome.” Shumway said the faculty has an obligation to certify that students are ready to graduate and this involves having a student finish the class in total. He thinks the Faculty Senate can work out a proposal that will be suitable to students and the adminis tration. Dr. Peter Hugill, chairman of the academic affairs committee of the Faculty Senate and assistant profes sor of geography, said in any fair sit uation, a professor should run stu dents through the same set of exams. “Graduating seniors miss a week of instruction and you’re essentially not comparing apples with apples,” Hugill said. Shumway said the new resolution the Student Senate will propose is similar to the calendar proposal made late last spring. The Faculty Senate found that one unsatisfactory because of the need for two finals, he said. "We are hoping as soon as we get our Fish Camp staff, we can have a volunteer work day,” she said. “We, along with the Wesley Foundation, hope to help them out.” Hudson said she believes restora tion of the site will require a long, slow process. But the aid the Lake- view people are receiving will help keep the cost of rebuilding down, she said. “They (Lakeview) will be able to save a lot of manpower because of all the volunteer work that is done,” Hudson said. “They were in the process of renovating before the tor nadoes hit, but many of the main buildings were not severely hurt. The facilities should be repaired in a matter of months.” Hudson said the facilities should be ready for Fish Camp this sum mer. If the tornadoes had hit the area closer to summer, however, Fish Camp would have been left without a home, she said. “There is (no site) that we are aware of in the state that can accom modate Fish Camp,” Hudson said. “I don’t know what we would do. “With a bit of creativity, we could probably pull something off here on campus and not lose the camarade rie and interaction of Fish Camp.” "service center We fix anything on four wheels!
