4 "Out of Silence" Yanni Private Music ***y 2 For the uninitiated, new age is a musical style that combines elements of pop, jazz and classical music. One label that has consistently released some of the better new age records is Private Music, and this latest release by Yanni, a Greek born composer, is another high quality album. According to Private Music, Yanni was born in Kalamata, a small town on the Mediterranian. “Out of Silence,” his current album, was inspired by his recent trip back to his hometown after a 13-year absence. Yanni composed all of the music for the album and recorded it at his own studio in Minneapolis. Each sound on the album was created with the aid of synthesizers. There are no vocals on this album, but this is definitely not elevator music. Most of the songs are upbeat and make good use of keyboards. Stringed instruments are imitated extremely well on several of the numbers. All the music is nicely layered and often stirs images of early morning maritime activities. The better songs on the album are “Sand Dance” and “Point of Origin.” “Sand Dance” leads off the album with a full, rich sound. “Point of Origin” has the feel of mystery and intrigue. “Secret Vows” is a slower romantic tune. “Acroyali” and “After the Sunrise” are also slower songs that are very good. The album has no weak songs. All of them are good by themselves, but are most impressive when the album is listened to as a whole. The music is light and energetic and has the potential to appeal to a wide variety of record buying groups. This is a fine new age album by Yanni. Private Music has yet another release to be proud of. -Review by Tom Reinarts "Local Bands" Various Artists KANM Cassettes ***y 2 The local music scene has been growing quite rapidly in the past few years. Currently, several local clubs present live bands every week. Because of this development some local musicians have been gaining popularity, but there has been no big rush to record them. This release by KANM, on cassette only, could help improve that situation by giving four local groups more exposure. This cassette is a low budget production with a few technical problems, but it does a surprisingly good job of presenting four talented local bands. Featured on this recording are Four Hams on Rye, Fusion, I Can’t Find My Sheep and Subversive Youth. Each band has three songs on the tape.
