Minnesota dropped to an 8-7 re-, cord. The Oilers now are 4-11. Zendejas kicked field goals of 31 and 33 yards and Warren Moon hit Ernest Givins with a 10-yard touch down pass to give the Oilers a 13-7 halftime lead. After a scoreless third period, Zendejas kicked a 36-yarder with 10:52 to play. Zendejas missed a 31-yarder with 2 minutes, 21 seconds left in the game, but a Viking holding call gave Houston a first down at the 9-yard line. Two plays later, rookie Allen Pin- kett ran one yard for a touchdown with 1:58 left in the game. Kramer, the NFL’s top rated passer at 93.7, completed 3 of 13 passes for 47 yards before leaving the game late in the second quarter with a bruised elbow. Wade Wilson replaced Kramer and directed the Vikings to a 40- yard field goal by Chuck Nelson with 6:59 left in the game. Minnesota scored 142 first quarter points in 14 previous games but it was held scoreless in the opening pe riod. The Vikings got their first points in the second period on Kramer’s 32-yard touchdown pass to running back Allen Rice. Kramer was ineffective against the Oilers, who have allowed an NFL low 46 percent completion rate by opposing quarterbacks. Wilson finished with 11 comple tions on 28 attempts for 148 yards, with three interceptions. Moon, who missed last week’s game with a thumb injury, returned to complete 22 of 37 passes for 280 yards and one touchdown. Oiler rookie Ernest Givens caught six passes for 108 yards and went over the 1,000-yard mark for the season. Anthony Carter caught six passes for 86 yards to pace Minnesota. A television end zone replay showed the ball hitting the ground, but replay official Fred Silva ruled an interception because he did not see that version of the play until sev eral minutes later. Minnesota’s second-quarter touchdown was set up by a 30-yard run with a faked punt by Viking punter Greg Coleman to the Hous ton 32. After one incomplete pass, Kramer hit Rice for the touchdown. Minnesota drove in the second quarter to Houston’s 1-yard line, where Darrin Nelson fumbled and Houston’s Keith Bostic recovered at the Viking 2. AFC playoff picture muddy; NFC races become clearer (AP) — While the Cleveland Browns nailed down a division title and the New York Jets, riding a four-game losing streak, qualified for the NFL playoffs through the back door, the AFC wild-card scram ble became wilder than ever Sunday. The NFC situation became a lot simpler after San Francisco beat New England 29-24 and Houston surprised Minnesota 23-10. That meant the 49ers have at least a wild card spot. By beating the Los An geles Rams on Friday night, San Francisco would win the NFC West, making the Rams a wild-card team. The Rams lost to Miami 37-31 in overtime on Sunday, but already are in the playoffs. So are the NFC East champion New York Giants, who downed St. Louis 27-7, the Washing ton Redskins, who will host the wild card game, and the defending Super Bowl champion Chicago Bears, who have won the NFC Central. The Bears are at Detroit Monday night. In contrast, the AFC playoff situa tion is almost unbelievable. At least the Browns didn’t muddle the pic ture more. Cleveland beat the Cin cinnati Bengals 34-3 to clinch the Central crown. The rest of the AFC picture is a puzzle. Denver, which beat Wash ington 31-30 on Saturday, has won the West. The Jets, blasted 45-24 by Pittsburgh on Saturday, have a wild card spot even though they’ve lost their last four games. And the Jets still could win the East outright. They are tied at 10-5 with the New England Patriots. The only team which can secure a wild-card position with a victory next week, regardless of what else hap pens, is Kansas City, which defeated the Los Angeles Raiders 20-17 on Sunday to go to 9-6. If the Chiefs win at Pittsburgh next weekend, they are in. The Patriots face Miami on Dec. 22 in their finale. A New England victory would give the Patriots the East crown and makes the Jets a wild-card. A Patriots’ loss, however, would give the Jets the East title, based on a better record within the conference. Got that? Well, there’s more. ( Because the second wild-card team could finish at 9-7 — that is, if the Bengals, Chiefs and Seahawks all lose and Miami and Los Angeles each win next weekend — the Dol phins and Raiders remain alive. If all of that happens. New England would be the host wild-card team be cause of a 10-6 record, the Jets would win the East, and the Raiders would get the other wild-card berth because of a better conference re cord than the other 9-7 teams. The defending AFC champion Patriots could miss out on the play offs altogether if they lose their fi nale to Miami. But for that to hap pen, two of the teams in the group of Kansas City, Cincinnati and Seattle must win next week. Gooden arrested in Florida after scuffle with police TAMPA, Fla. (AP) — New York Mets pitcher Dwight Gooden, known as “Dr. K,” was arrested after a brawl with officers who had stopped his car and a second car driven by a cousin, police said Sun day. “It was all pushing, shoving and kicking — that type of thing,” police Lt. T.L. Cotter said. “There were no weapons involved.” Gooden, 22, and two officers were treated for minor injuries at a hospi tal, he said. One policeman suffered a mild concussion, Cotter said. Gooden was charged with disor derly conduct, resisting arrest with violence and battery on a police offi cer, Cotter said. Gooden, his cousin and a former high school teammate.
