Man gets death penalty for kidnapping, murder ANAHUAC (AP) — A 32-year- old Winnie man was assessed the death penalty Monday for kidnap ping and murdering a High Island tavern owner last October. A jury in State District Judge Car- roll Wilborn’s court took five hours and 10 minutes before deciding that Johnny James should die by injec tion, said Beckie Church, secretary for the Chambers County district at torney’s office. Jurors had a choice between the death penalty and life in prison. Testimony in the punishment phase began Wednesday and ended Friday. Jurors needed only 37 minutes Wednesday to convict James, a dump truck driver, in the Oct. 22 kidnapping and murdering of 47- year-old Barbara Harrington May- field. He also is charged with robbing, kidnapping, raping and shooting a 24-year-old Winnie convenience store clerk. Defense attorney Ron Marsh had contended alcohol was a major fac tor in James’ behavior. Some of the defendant’s relatives testified Friday in his behalf. District Attorney Michael R. Little argued that James was a continuing threat to society. Dr. James Grigson testified for the prosecution that James has a type of personality marked by “no regard for other people’s lives.” Just say no Anti-drug campaign to hit Texas AUSTIN (AP) — Texas first lady Linda Gale White, joined by child television performer Cherie John son, announced Monday that the na tional “Just Say No” anti-drug cam paign will open in Texas with a Capitol rally on Sept. 20. “As a former teacher, I realize that our young people are faced with peer pressure,” White told a news conference. “That pressure can lead them to experiment with drugs to es cape their personal problems and also their problems at home and at school. “But I also know how such pres sure can be counteracted with the positive peer pressure to succeed. On the athletic fields, in the class rooms, during final exams or other stressful times, our young students should be encouraged to just say ‘No,’ ” she said. “Just Say No” was started in Oak land, Calif., in January 1985, and national executive director Tom Ad ams said there are now almost 10,000 clubs of children ages 7 to 12 who are committed to not using drugs. “There is no social movement in this country that’s ever swept it as quickly and as brilliantly as this has, and largely it’s because the kids want it — they need it — and there are sensitive and there are strong adults who want to help them to do it,” Ad ams said. Adams said he thought the Sep tember rally and march to Audito rium Shores on Town Lake would give children in the program en couragement. In October, he said, schools and communities will be asked to declare themselves “Just Say No” schools and communities. Scrolls signed by students will be delivered to the White House, he said. Bobby Heard, a recent graduate of Round Rock High School and a member of two statewide anti-drug councils, told the news conference, “By saying no to drugs, we’re saying yes to so much more.” He said, “The real significance is the seed that is planted for a whole new generation of drug-free youths.” Cherie, who has appeared on the TV show “Punky Brewster” for the past two years, gave White a “Just Say No” T-shirt. Cherie was described by Adams as “wonderful role model for young people.” Ross Newby, executive director of the Texas Commission on Alcohol and Drug Abuse, said, “I think any reasoning person knows that in America today we are at an epidemic stage of all kinds of drug abuse, and I certainly include alcohol ... it is a horrible, horrible problem.” Dedicated fans find ‘Dallas’ filming sites WYLIE (AP) — While most tele vision viewers are waiting to see how Bobby Ewing returns to “Dallas,” a few die-hard fans may find out sooner. Jean Graham, Carol Ireland and a few others dig out their binoculars around the parking lot of Steaks Over Texas as technicians and crew members prepare for filming. “Where’s Larry Hagman and Pat rick Duffy?” Graham asks as she scans the crowd with specs, looking for stars of the blockbuster series. Neither Hagman nor Duffy, the show’s two principal stars, showed up and none of the action or dia logue reveals anything about Bobby Ewing or the story line. The women stayed anyway. Shooting locations like this one along State Highway 78 northeast of Garland are top secret. So where did these women come from? “A woman I go to church with knows someone who works for the City of Wylie, and I guess the film company has to file with the city where it is going to shoot,” Graham says. A few hours later and a short dis tance down the road, the process re peats itself, this time at the Rushin Lumber Co. Bonnie Rushin and her son, Kevin, watch the crew arrive and begin setting up. “I’m looking at all the good- looking girls because that’s who my son is looking at,” Ms. Rushin says. “I ought to be checking out the good-looking men.” SCHULMAN THEATRES : 2.50 ADMISSION 1.
