But now, almost exactly a year af ter the Dnllns Times Hemld yanked die “Joe Bob Goes To The Drive-In” column for being too offensive, Joe Bob Briggs has gone public. On college campuses, in comedy clubs and with videocassettes, he is trying to show America “that Joe Bob ain’t Darth Vader.” Former Times Herald columnist John Bloom, who began writing the Joe Bob columns in January 1982, says he had to dump Joe Bob’s cele brated anonymity to keep his alter ego alive. He contends his former bosses — the guys who Joe Boh entreats Jesus in one of his comedy routines to turn into “editor fondue”— have tried to assassinate Joe Boh to keep him (|tiiet. Bloom has sued the newspapei and the Los Angeles l imes Syndi cate, which had distributed the col umn to 57 newspapers nationally, over rights to the Joe Boh name. He is seeking $900,000 in dam ages and charges that the Times Herald indefinitely delayed publica tion of a hook of “ Joe Bob Goes 1 o The Drive-In” columns in a dispute over who owns rights to the fictitious persona. The newspapei dropped the Joe Boh column last April after Bloom’s parody of the pop music song" Are The World” precipitated storm of protest from the t in's bL: community. Times Herald Associate Edirl Ro\ Bode says the paper has neve I attempted to censor Bloom bulbil nied to set some conditions on fe| use of the character. Specifically, ibf I lines Herald didni want Joe Bob attack the paper either in his foil umns or in speeches. Bloom al that censorship and has refusedlil bend. So while attorneys from bothsidt u\ to work out a settlement, Blow who is working on an historie novel, actively is promoting hisalie ego through stand-up comedyraij tines, videos and speeches arour the country. To Diane Carlson Evans and other women who served in Vietnam, she is a symbol of some thing too long forgotten. Evans hopes to see that woman, a 7-foot statue, standing at the Viet nam memorial in Washington, D.C., to those who fought and died in the war. Evans, 89, of River Falls, Wis., is one of the founders of the Vietnam Women's Memorial Project, a volun teer group based in Minneapolis that has launched a nationwide drive to raise S l million to erect a statue hon oring military and civilian women Vietnam veterans. She says the statue would balance a statue ol three male veterans over looking the Vietnam Veterans Me morial, a wall of polished black gran ite bearing the names of more than 5<S,()()() Americans killed or missing in Southeast Asia. The Wall hears the names of eight women, though an estimated l (),()()() women served in Vietnam. Some 7.()()() of them served as military nurses, and the rest as Red Gross workers, air traffic controllers, CIA employ ees or in other capacities. The statue was born in 1983, when Evans, attending a salute to Vietnam veterans, saw the work of Minneapolis sculptor Rodger Bro- din, known for his statues of sol diers. Brodin said, “The message I got liom Diane was she was tired (in Vietnam). Tired of the hours, tired of t he war, tired ol t he climate. This statue is tired.
