Monday, April 14, 1986/The Battalion/Page 5 | World and Nation Reverend terms meeting fruitful Jackson talks to Hormel official ly/ H r ' fWt ■ Ml 4 AUSTIN, Minn. (AP) — The Rev. Jesse Jackson met Sunday with pro testers arrested in a violent demon stration during the nearly 8-month- old strike against Hormel and said his meeting with a company official earlier in the day was fruitful. “The issue is not about jobs, con frontation and tear gas,” the civil rights leader told reporters after his jail visit with the protesters arrested Friday. “It’s about getting to work.” Jackson, who had offered to me diate the contract dispute, met with Hormel Vice President Charles Ny- berg earlier Sunday but said he did not get any promise for renewed ne gotiations with Local P-9 of the United Food and Corpmercial Workers union. Nyberg had said Saturday of Jack son’s visit: “His suggestions, any sug gestions, would be most welcome. A pure mediation role, we don’t think, would be positive.” Jackson also met with law enforce ment officials and Mayor Tom Rough and planned to meet with leaders and members of Local P-9. Seventeen demonstrators were ar rested Friday during a violent pro test outside Hormel’s Austin plant, and authorities said 16 remained in jail Sunday. Jackson and the jailed protesters sang “We Shall Overcome,” and jailed P-9 strike strategist Ray Rog ers told Jackson that “spirits are fine.” Friday’s clash between police and demonstrators erupted when more than 300 demonstrators attempted to shut the plant down by blocking the entry gates and roads leading to the gates. In addition to the 17 demonstra tors arrested Friday, a warrant was issued for the arrest of P-9 President Jim Guyette on charges related to the confrontation. Guyette argued that Friday’s dem onstration was peaceful until it was “turned into a riot by the Hormel company in partnership with the city, county and state law enforce ment officials.” On Saturday, thousands of strik ing meatpackers and supporters marched peacefully through the streets of this southern Minnesota town. The international union withdrew its sanction of the strike last month. The local refused to end the strike, and a hearing has been scheduled for Monday to determine if the par ent union should place P-9 in trust eeship and remove its officers. wcausekti bian, jus that afu on Stic i. which is he youili itemms s," said b Mexican SI .. Ardan Catalog Showrooms Reagan cries foul in battle over Contra aid proposal WASHINGTON (AP) — Presi dent Reagan’s fight to persuade Congress to send SI00 million in aid to Nicaragua’s Contra rebels enters a third round this week with the White House accusing Democrats of foul play in writing the rules. Democratic leaders who exer cise majority control of the House chained the Contra aid proposal to an unrelated’ S1.7 billion spending bill which administra tion officials say the president may veto because it is “larded up” with unneeded programs. Reagan says that the Demo crats, bv tving the aid package to the spending bill, sought to de feat his plan and could endanger the lives of the rebels. The House is scheduled to open debate on the issue Tues- dav. Tuesday is also the deadline Congress set for itself to pass a budget for the fiscal year starting Oct. 1. But that date will be missed because the spending plan is snarled in disagreement be tween the White House and Con gress over military spending- # MSC LOST & FOUND AUCTION Rudder Fountain April 17 10am -1 pm cash only CALCULATORS, SPORTS EQUIPMENT, UMBRELLAS, JEWELRY & MORE Procrastination leads to taxation.
