Wednesday, April 9, 1986,/The Battalion/Page 9 Voters make Eastwood's day in mayor's race CARMEL-BY-TH E-SEA, Calif. (AP) — Voters in this tour ist village made Clint Eastwood’s day Tuesday, turning out in heavy numbers to give the Holly wood tough guy a landslide vic tory in a mayoral election. With three of four precincts and absentee ballots counted, Eastwood had 1,712 votes, or 72.1 percent, to 663 votes, or 27.9 percent, for two-time incumbent Charlotte Townsend. The partial returns rep resented 57.4 percent of the 4,142 registered voters in the tiny resort village. Eastwood, veteran of more than 40 movies and one of the world’s top box-office draws, voted early at the All Saints Epis copal Church, surrounded by dozens of reporters and photog raphers from around the world. Business was reported brisk at all four polling places in the one- square-mile community. Eastwood, best known for his spaghetti Westerns and detective films like “Dirty Harry,” attended a private tea with residents after he voted, while supporters scur ried to get voters to the polls. Eastwood, 55, was making his first try for office against Towns end, a 61-year-old retired librar ian, and Timothy Crady, a 27- year-old dishwasher who said he wanted to tear up some streets in favor of horse trails. Eastwood had taken more than a year off from his acting and di recting career and promised vot ers he would make the mayor’s job his top priority. The winner takes over the $200-a-month, two-year job on April 15. Eastwood chided the horde of 400 reporters from around the country, Europe and Japan who have descended on Carmel. “What do you all care about this?” he said. “You’ll all be gone after tomorrow.” World and Nation Bomb explodes in Lebanon; at least 10 killed, 110 injured JOUNIEH, Lebanon (AP) — A car bomb exploded in the main square of this Christian port while it was packed with lunch-hour crowds Tuesday, killing at least 10 people and wounding 110. A blue BMW sedan blew up only 50 yards from offices of President Amin Gemayel’s Phalange Party, set 25 cars ablaze and damaged build ings 500 yards away. It was the latest in a series of bombings in Christian areas since mid-January. In south Lebanon, a suicide bomber drove an explosives-laden car into a checkpoint manned by Is raeli-backed militiamen, killing him self and wounding six people, Leb anon’s state radio reported. It was the first suicide bombing reported this year in what Israel calls its secu-- rity zone. Radios reported 16 people were killed in the Chouf Mountain village of Bsaba, southeast of Beirut, in a clan feud between Sunni Moslems and Druse warriors from rival vil lages. “It’s always the innocent people who are the victims,” said Prime Minister Rashid Karami, a Sunni Moslem opposed to the Maronite Catholic president, who also called the Jounieh bombing treacherous. Youssef Bitar, the top police ex plosives expert, said about 165 pounds of explosives were packed inside the sedan. It blew up at 1:05 p.m., the height of the lunch break. Police said 10 charred bodies were pulled from the rubble of two high- rise office buildings that took the brunt of the blast. Water pipes were ripped open, flooding the glass-strewn square where rescuers dug through the rubble looking for survivors. Jumpy Christian militiamen, fear ing more bombs, fired bursts from automatic rifles and several rocket- propelled grenades into the air to clear paths for ambulances. Christian radio stations broadcast lists of the casualties. Police say about 1,190 people have been killed and more than 2,500 wounded this year in Lebanon’s political and secta rian warfare. Jounieh, 13 miles north of Beirut, is the main Christian outlet to the Mediterranean and generally has been spared during 11 years of civil No one claimed responsibility for the Jounieh blast, as usual in bomb ings in Christian areas. The Pha lange has blamed loyalists of Elie Hobeika, Gemayel’s main Christian rival, for earlier bomb attacks. Syria supports Hobeika, whose militiamen were defeated by Gem- ayel’s forces in a day-long battle Jan. 15 that cost hundreds of lives. At least 50 people were killed and more than 300 wounded by the ear lier bombs. The most recent bomb ing in the Ashrafieh neighborhood of east Beirut killed 10 and wounded 80. According to the state radio re port, the suicide bomber in south Lebanon detonated an estimated 220 pounds of explosives, wounding three militiamen and three civilians. Bush says U.S. ships deter trouble MANAMA, Bahrain (AP) — Vice President George Bush said Tuesday that U.S. warships patrolling the oil- rich Persian Gulf are a signal to potential troublemak ers that “they’d better think twice” and blunt Soviet in fluence in the region. Bush visited the USS LaSalle, the command ship for a U.S. naval task force in the gulf, to stress American military power in the region. The white-painted flag ship, docked at a Bahrainian port, is known as “the Great White Ghost of the Arabian Coast.” Standing under a canopy on the sun-drenched flight- deck, Bush told sailors the task force helps blunt Soviet influence in the gulf. “The fact that you’re here helps friendly countries resist Soviet attempts to gain influence, gain dominance in this area,” Bush said. The gulf has been rocked by a 5 '/a-year war between Arab Iraq and Persian Iran. Arab countries in the re gion fear Iranian attacks on Persian Gulf oil tankers and the spread of the religious fundamentalism of Aya tollah Ruhollah Khomeini, Tehran’s spiritual leader. Gulf shipping, including large oil tankers, have been targets for both the Iranian and Iraqi air forces. “We are concerned and our concern stems mainly from the fact that we don’t want to see Iran shift the balance of power in the area nor threaten any of the friendly countries — the Gulf Cooperation Council countries,” he said. That group includes Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, Oman, Qatar, United Arab Emirates and Ku wait. Bush also discussed last month’s U.S.-Libya con frontation in the Gulf of Sidra. The Reagan administra tion said U.S. forces sunk at least two Libyan patrol boats and attacked a missile site after Libya fired mis siles at U.S. warplanes. “They responded swiftly and there’s a great pride all across the United States because of that,” he said. Bahrain makes its facilities available to the U.S. Navy but is sensitive about attention focused on its military ties with the United States. “Go see it (the ship). Don’t make too much fuss about it,” Sheik Mohammed bin Mubarak al-Khalifa, Bah rain’s foreign minister, told reporters earlier. Bush also conferred with the emir of Bahrain on the Iran-Iraq war, Middle East peace efforts and oil prices. College Credit: The InterFlrst Student Loan.
