Officials blame the long waits on the fact that civilian doctors are not enlisting. Lt. Cmdr. Ron Bubb, director for administration, “Because we have fewer providers, appointments are harder to get so patients are using the emergency room when there is really no emergency.” Naval Hospital’s 18 doctors serve 25,000 active personnel, veterans and their dependents. The hospital, built in 1974 with 195 beds, now op erates 40 beds. The hospital has lost four doctors in the past year. Bubb said the Navy, despite its recruiting efforts, has trouble getting replacements for specialists. The facility has no der matologists or ophthamologists, and provides no maternity care. The staff includes two pediatricians, but one is leaving soon, Bubb said. Capt. Charles Loar, commanding officer of the hospital, expects staff ing to improve by September so that access will be easier and waits shorter. Meanwhile, Loar urges patients to use CHAMPUS (Civilian Health and Medical Program for Uniformed Services) instead of using the hospi tal’s emergency room for non-emer gencies. Under CHAMPUS, civilian doctors are reimbursed by the gov ernment for treating military per sonnel and retirees. Warped by Scott McCullar 100 VIANT TO KUA/T OH THE. VCR T0HIGHT? TUNNELS AND TROLLS I Man killed after shooting ex-wife in convenience store EULESS (AP) — Marlon Mat- aele’s and Sandra Lobendahn’s relationship, filled with violence and reconciled by pledges of love, was stormy from the time they ran off to be married as teen-agers in Hawaii, relatives said. They ended their life together Sunday night, violently, in the back room of a Euless convenience store. Lobendahn, 26, a clerk at the Kwik Pantry grocery store, died from a single bullet fired from a gun held close to her head, the Tarrant County medical examiner ruled Monday. Mataele, 27, was shot and killed by police who blew open a door with ex plosives and stormed into the store where he had been holding his for mer wife hostage for two days. Shortly after taking over the building, Mataele had shot and wounded a police sergeant in the shoulder as the officer responded to a silent alarm. While they were still married, Mataele went to Tonga and married another woman, Lobendahn said. Later he came to Hawaii and his sec ond wife followed, she said. When her daughter learned of the second marriage she divorced Mataele. However, she continued seeing him and the couple had two more children. Police said they tried to end the incident peacefully, negotiating through Mataele brothers.
