Students decide
against paying
college athletes
By SCOTT SUTHERLAND
Staff Writer
A group of" about 250 students
faced each other in an open forum
debate Monday on whether or not to
pay college athletes like profession
als.
There were hands waved and
voices raised in protest. And despite
good arguments on both sides, the
majority decided against paying col
lege athletes on scholarship. A body
count as students left after the de
bate showed a score of 83 in favor
and 153 against the resolution.
The Texas A&M Debate Society
sponsored the debate.
Brett Shine, a former student
body president candidate, argued
against the resolution. Kyle Barring
ton, a junior speech communications
major, arguect in favor of the resolu
tion.
Barrington began the opening re
marks and said that without some
kind of payment system, college ath
letics might crumble. He cited a
study that said almost 60 percent of
the college athletic programs are in
danger of collapsing.

The Texas A&M One-Wheelers
will cycle through downtown Hous

Thanksgiving Day Parade.
The unicycle club, which has been
at A&M for six years, received the
invitation to ride in the Foley’s pa

club president, Paul Schliesing, said
C.J. Johnson, co-president of the
One-Wheelers.
The theme of this year’s parade is
the Texas Sesquicentennial, Johnson
said.

Barrington also said colleges
know that student athletes are an as
set sold to the public for power and
influence. And that a school’s teams
are great public relations pawns.
He said universities in the United
States have become dependent upon
college football for millions of dol
lars, and yet the players receive no
compensation.
Shine said in his opening remarks
that the goal of college athletics has
been clouded by recruiting scandals.
He said he preferred the status quo
to the proposal that college players
be payed.
He added that college schol
arships can be worth as much as
$150,000.
Shine said the resolution defeats
the original intention of scholarships
— providing an education. He said
the emphasis in college athletics
should be to put the student back in
the student athlete.
The room was separated into
halves. One side was reserved for
those in favor of the resolution and
the other side was reserved for peo
ple against it.

In the parade, the cyclists will

Johnson said. One club member will
ride a recumberit bicycle and several
members will juggle, he said.
“I’ll jump rope in front of the re

Johnson said the One-Wheelers

Approximately 10 students are
