There were hands waved and voices raised in protest. And despite good arguments on both sides, the majority decided against paying col lege athletes on scholarship. A body count as students left after the de bate showed a score of 83 in favor and 153 against the resolution. The Texas A&M Debate Society sponsored the debate. Brett Shine, a former student body president candidate, argued against the resolution. Kyle Barring ton, a junior speech communications major, arguect in favor of the resolu tion. Barrington began the opening re marks and said that without some kind of payment system, college ath letics might crumble. He cited a study that said almost 60 percent of the college athletic programs are in danger of collapsing. The unicycle club, which has been at A&M for six years, received the invitation to ride in the Foley’s pa rade through connections of former club president, Paul Schliesing, said C.J. Johnson, co-president of the One-Wheelers. The theme of this year’s parade is the Texas Sesquicentennial, Johnson said. And that a school’s teams are great public relations pawns. He said universities in the United States have become dependent upon college football for millions of dol lars, and yet the players receive no compensation. Shine said in his opening remarks that the goal of college athletics has been clouded by recruiting scandals. He said he preferred the status quo to the proposal that college players be payed. He added that college schol arships can be worth as much as $150,000. Shine said the resolution defeats the original intention of scholarships — providing an education. He said the emphasis in college athletics should be to put the student back in the student athlete. The room was separated into halves. In the parade, the cyclists will demonstrate backward and forward riding, one-foot riding and spins, Johnson said. One club member will ride a recumberit bicycle and several members will juggle, he said. “I’ll jump rope in front of the re viewing stand (while riding),” John son said. “That’s what I like to show off.” Johnson said the One-Wheelers will drive to Houston Thursday morning and return in time for the A&M - University of Texas football game. Approximately 10 students are members of the One-Wheelers, he said.
