Austin gangs attacking illegal aliens Associated Press AUSTIN — Gangs of young men are responsible for dozens of brutal armed robberies and at least three killings in east Austin this year, po lice said. “They say they prefer to attack il legal aliens, but if they get someone else, that’s just as good,” said Lt. John Stewart, of the Austin robbery detail. Stewart, who has investigated many of the youths, mostly 15 to 28 years old, says the gang members “don’t seem to care who they hurt, and they don’t care if they kill their victims or not.” Stewart said many illegal aliens live and work in the part of Austin where the robberies have been com mitted. In many of the cases, victims tell law officers they were shot, stabbed or beaten before any attempt was made to rob them, Stewart said Monday. Stewart said as many as 300 young men may be involved in the rob beries. He said the people who commit the crimes are not members of tight- knit gangs, but know each other from school, live in the same neigh borhood or congregate in the same park.
