0 mjmm 1 niM i By KARL PALLMEYER Music Reviewer Believe it or not there are several people who know nothing about Bob Dylan ex cept that he is the one who sings out of key on "We Are the World." During the 60's, Dylan established himself as one of the most brilliant songwriters of the century. His work since then has been groups of seemingly pointless experiments with various forms of music. With "Empire Burlesque," Dylan has been able to meld his 25 years of experience into an album that can both attract new fans and stand up al most as well as anything he has done before. "Empire Burlesque" is a fine blend of songs using many of the musical styles that Dylan has experi mented with over the years. It contains songs that can be classified as folk, rock, coun try, reggae or gospel. Dylan uses many fine musicians like Rolling Stone guitarist Ron Wood, Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers keyboard player Benmont Tench, drummer Jim Keltner, bas sist Robbie Shakespeare, drummer Sly Dunbar and a gospel chorus to achieve a wide range of musical styles. During the 60's, Dylan was classified as a protest singer. Some say his music since then is weak because he isn't protesting anything. It's the story of a Viet nam veteran and his treble re-adjusting to civilian life. It's a scathing attack on yes- terday's establishment which felt the army would make a men of young boys. Dylan was also known for his examinations of tradi- tional male-female relationships and changing sexual roles. Since the time Dylan wrote songs like "It Ain't Me, Babe," "Just Like a Woman" and "Positively 4th Street,"’ sexual roles have changed again. On the new album, Dylan studies the af termath of the sexual revolu tion and its effect on modern society in the songs "Tight Connection To My Heart (Has Anybody Seen My Lo ve)," "Seeing the Real You At Last," "I'll Remember You," "When the Night Comes Falling From the Sky" and "Something's Bur ning Baby." 'Trust Yourself" is one song that really struck me hard on first listen. Dylan's albums, "Slow Train Com ing," "Saved" and "Shot of Love" are rarely played on my stereo. These albums were released in Dylan's "Christian" period and I find them to be tedious, preachy and dull. When Dylan re leased "Infidels" two years ago, I was delighted to find he was leaving Christianity for broader themes. On "Trust Yourself," Dylan sings: "Well, you're on your own, you always were/in a land of wolves and thieves/ Don't put your hope in un godly man/Or be a slave to what somebody else belie ves." That's quite a change from "You've Got to Serve Somebody." Dylan's voice is the only thing that bothers me about "Empire Burlesque." Admit- tably Dylan's voice is not the best in the world but it is ap propriate and mostly effec tive ior his songs. Now Dy lan seems to be using his trademark nasal whine to a point of self-parody, espe cially when he harmonizes with Madelyn Quebec on "I'll Remember You" and "When the Night Comes Falling From the Sky." I hope that "Empire Bur lesque" will open the ears of the new generation to the music of Bod Dylan. The older generation should re alize that the album marks Dylan's arrival into the 80's.D 10.Fresh, Kool and the Gang MM S1.00 OFF FAJITAS Month of June FAJITAS FOR ONE $5.50 FAJITAS FOR TWO $10.95 FAJITAS FOR THREE $13.75 $2.00 OFF SUNDAYS $2°° off Dinner Ole' Dinner Tampico, Dinner Especial, any mexican specialty or our world famous Fajitas with a cur rent TAMU student, faculty or staff I.D. The script dis plays more flab than mus cle, but the film is peopled with such attractive faces and bodies that it's bound to be a crowd-pleaser. Based on Rolling Stone articles by Aaron Latham and written by Latham and director James Bridges, "Perfect" casts John Travolta as a hotshot Rolling Stone reporter who wangles an inter view with an industrialist accused of cocaine deal ing (familiar?). His next assignment is to investi gate the body-building in dustry in California. Travolta becomes en tranced with Jamie Lee Curtis, a superstar among aerobics teachers. An Olympic-class swimmer who has been stung by a scandalous article, she is suspicious of Travolta's motives, and with good reason. He is depicted as one of those reporters who would betray his mother for a good story. Love redeems him, but only after he has ruined a few reputations. "Perfect" may have set a new record for rock-mu sic scores; 28 songs are listed in the credits.. □ the remedy %> Good Food Live Music Great Fun This week; June 21-The Meisons June 22-The Locomotives June 25-Open Stage June 26'Movie Pub June 27-Omar and the Howlers 4410 Coliege Main 846-1812 i GIRLS WAIT! ^ Thinking of a perm? Have you ever gotten a perm that 3^. turned out dry and frizzy? Or maybe you've gotten one that * wasn’t the type of curl you wanted. If so let me explain some * reasons why this has probably happened: almost every perm ^ available to hairdressers (and even those available on grocery T shelves) are made to be as trouble-free to stylists as possible; £ therefore, they say “processes in 20 minutes - no test curl 3f needed, cannot overprocess!” So theoretically if Sally, Jane and Betty all use this perm their hair will turn out perfect every time - sorry it doesn’t work like that. Each girl has different hair types J and each requires special attention. Sally's curl will form in 10 £ minutes -so if you leave the solution on for those extra 10 min- J utes her hair will turn out very dry and probably frizzy - Jane’s 4. hair is strong and resistant to a curl therefore 20 minutes will present a weak curl formation - it probably won’t last a month. ^ Then there is Betty - she’s had a perm ever since high school J and her hair isn’t in good condition so it’s going to require spe- J cial pre and post perm conditioning treatments. Get the idea? J Now most hair stylists aren’t going to take the extra time to take * test curls and even if they do - I’ve found many don’t even know * what to look for and many will even do another cut while you’re * processing... J Don’t want any of the above to happen to you? I don’t either. J That’s one of the reasons I became a hairstylist. I saw too many J girls get their hair ruined by some uncaring hairstylist. The * other reason is that I love to do hair and I know how to do it * right. Whether I’m cutting or perming your hair you’ll be getting J the special attention you deserve.
