Ray Page, Campbell vice presi dent for corporate relations, said Campbell will encourage growers to send representatives to a commis sion that will set up guidelines for FLOC elections on Ohio and Michi gan farms that contract with Camp bell. However, growers would not be required to take part in the agreement. Velasquez said the agreement would not be Final until the two sides agree on how and where elections are to be held to determine if farm workers want to be represented by FLOC in contract negotiations with growers. The pact was signed May 13 after mediation by the National Council of Churches but kept secret until Tuesday, Page said from Bowling Green, where he met with FLOC President Baldemar Velasquez to New cancer therapies may not extend life Associated Press BOSTON — Figures that appear to show some cancer victims survive longer now than 20 years ago may be statistical mirages since the disease is being spotted sooner now and pa tients are followed longer before they die, a study suggests. A recent theory holds that im- C roving survival figures result irgely from diagnosis, not longer life. The study directed by Dr. Alvan R. Feinstein at Yale University School of Medicine backs this up. The researchers said they ex pected that new cancer treatments would have improved survival rates. Instead, these therapies seem to have helped some and harmed oth ers. Carolyn K. Wells, a statistician who participated in the study, noted that the research looked only at the effects of new treatment on lung cancer, which is the nation’s leading cancer killer. Figures compiled by the National Cancer Institute seem to show that the survival of lung cancer victims is improving. In the early 1960s, 8 per cent of white victims and 5 percent of blacks survived for five years. By the early 1980s, this had risen to 13 percent for whites and 11 percent for blacks. Federal officials assert that in the 1950s, only about a third of all can cer patients survived for Five years. Now they say half do. vard School of Public Health says the odds of dying of cancer are the same now as a generation ago.
