It is likely to become the first summer re lease to top $100 million. ■ “The Goonies,” Steven Spielberg’s pirate adventure, was in second Mace with a weekend gross of $8.4 million. It has earned $22 million since opening two weeks ago but pnay face competition from several other Spielberg films set for summer release. “Fletch,” a Chevy Chase comedy about an oft-disguised investigative reporter, placed No. 3 in its third week. “Fletch” grossed $5.2 million for a total of $24.5 million. “Prizzi’s Honor” opened last week to critical praise. The black comedy directed by John Huston stars Jack Nicholson as a hit man for a mob family who falls in love with Kath leen Turner, portraying an indepen dent contract killer. The movie drew $4.2 million at 719 theaters and had the best per- screen-average, $5,841, of any cur rent release. Tom Sherak, 20th Century Fox’s distribution president, said “Prizzi” played strongest in urban areas and was weakest in blue-collar markets. However, he said he hoped that word-of-mouth endorsements will build demand for “Prizzi.” Fox is considering a tougher advertising campaign to woo more blue-collar moviegoers. Fifth place went to the James Bond film “A View to a Kill,” with a weekend gross of $3.4 million. “Brewster’s Millions” gathered $2.8 million in sixth. Another new re lease, “D.A.R.Y.L.,” earned $2.6 mil lion in its first week for seventh place, followed by “Perfect,” the newly opened “Secret Admirer” and “Beverly Hills Cop,” which held the tenth spot after 28 weeks. U.S. court rules against Gideons Associated Press MmI'1! DES moines - Iowa — The Gi - 5 iViwIi p eons International has agreed to u/ppp l stop banding out Bibles in Iowa pub- r • [ lie schools as part of a settlement in a [federal suit that challenged it under rtlerfclW principle of separation of church I and state. \M HiA B ^ Eic ’ a * s ^ ie l owa G ‘ v ri Liber- vvenClV- |ti t . s Union filed suit against the Gi- peons and the Adel-DeSoto Com- • rmunity School District on behalf of Weven J. Feierstein and his daugh- Special ter.Jenna. The Gideons had distrib uted Bibles to the girl’s fifth grade class on May 1, 1984. The ICLU said it was the first agreement of its kind in the nation involving the Gideons. ICLU staff counsel Mark Bennett said, “The Gideons now recognize that they exceed their free exercise of religion when they utilize the pub lic schools to assist them in distribut ing their religious message.” In a consent decree approved Fri day by U.S. District Judge Harold Victor, the Gideons also agreed not to provide Bibles to public school of ficials for distribution, while the school district agreed not to distrib ute Bibles in the future and to estab lish a section on comparative reli gion in its school libraries. The decree cannot restrict the Gi deons’ ability to distribute Bibles in Iowa on public property other than schools, unless the distribution in volves the active assistance of public officials. Wendell McClinton, assistant to the executive director, said the Gi deons had no comment. Eat>DaiIy Specials nth just at prrnwAnoKAi RESTAURANT 4«10 p.m. Sunday Pancakes Mon. Tues. Wed.
