Discover; left Earth on Monda; to launch three satellites, scan the Milk; Wa; for a black hole and conduct the first space test of a “Star Wars” laser. “The view is fantastic from here and we wish ; ou were with us,” Prince Sultan Salman Al-Saud told Mission Control. Eight hours after reaching orbit 200 miles above the globe, the crew launched a satellite for the Mexican government. The satellite, called Morelos-A, was sent spinning out of the shuttle’s cargo ba; at 50 revolu tions per minute while Discover; was over the equator, 1,700 miles south of the tip or Baja California. “Nominal, nominal, nominal,” said astronaut John Fabian after the Morelos launch. “Nominal,” is the astronaut wa; of sa; ing that ever; - thing went as planned. “A great job,” said mission con trol. Fort; -five minutes after the de- plo; ment, a rocket attached to the satellite sent Morelos toward its dut; station 22,300 miles above Earth. The satellite, named in honor of a hero of Mexico’s independence, will bring advanced telecommunications to the most remote parts of a coun- tr; where one quarter of the popula tion has no access to telephones and television. Another satellite, owned b; a con sortium of 22 Arab nations, is to be launched Tuesda;. Sultan, a 28- ; ear-old nephew of Saudia Arabia’s King Fahd, is on the flight to observe the deplo; ment of Arabsat. The third satellite, Telstar 3D, will be sent spinning out of the cargo ba; Wednesda; to join AT&T’s commu nications network. Each of the satellite owners is pa; - ing NASA about $11 million for the shuttle deliver; service.
