Shuttle to test Star Wars laser
Royal mission begins
Associated Press
CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. —
With a Saudi prince and a French
test pilot as passengers. Discover;
left Earth on Monda; to launch
three satellites, scan the Milk; Wa;
for a black hole and conduct the first
space test of a “Star Wars” laser.
“The view is fantastic from here
and we wish ; ou were with us,”
Prince Sultan Salman Al-Saud told
Mission Control.
Eight hours after reaching orbit
200 miles above the globe, the crew
launched a satellite for the Mexican
government. The satellite, called
Morelos-A, was sent spinning out of
the shuttle’s cargo ba; at 50 revolu
tions per minute while Discover; was
over the equator, 1,700 miles south
of the tip or Baja California.
“Nominal, nominal, nominal,”
said astronaut John Fabian after the
Morelos launch. “Nominal,” is the
astronaut wa; of sa; ing that ever; -
thing went as planned.
“A great job,” said mission con
trol.
Fort; -five minutes after the de-
plo; ment, a rocket attached to the
satellite sent Morelos toward its dut;
station 22,300 miles above Earth.
The satellite, named in honor of a
hero of Mexico’s independence, will
bring advanced telecommunications
to the most remote parts of a coun-
tr; where one quarter of the popula
tion has no access to telephones and
television.
Another satellite, owned b; a con
sortium of 22 Arab nations, is to be
launched Tuesda;. Sultan, a 28-
; ear-old nephew of Saudia Arabia’s
King Fahd, is on the flight to observe
the deplo; ment of Arabsat.
The third satellite, Telstar 3D, will
be sent spinning out of the cargo ba;
Wednesda; to join AT&T’s commu
nications network.
Each of the satellite owners is pa; -
ing NASA about $11 million for the
shuttle deliver; service.
On Thursda;, the astronauts will
put an experiment platform ovtt
(xiard to examine what ma; be
black hole lurking in the center^
the Milk; Wa; galax;, devourir,
stars, cosmic dust and gas at a rapt
rate. The platform will be retriew
Saturda; and used again for diflci
ent experiments on later flights.
