The interior is a mixture of ideas from Mullenix and her friends Deanna Muflenix, manager of me 2 Student to open club By CATHY RIELY StaffWriter E = me 2 . Einstein’s energy equation. Thanks to an A&=M student, that famed formula will now take on new meaning to Biyan-College Station resi dents. The A&>M student: Deanna Mullenix. The new meaning: a dance club called me 2 . Mullenix, an environmental geography major, is manager of the soon-to-be-opened club. A local businessman came to her with the idea because of her involvement in the local music scene. She has been a disc jockey at Dr. G’s for almost nine months. “He saw the success in Dance Attack (a new wave dance night at Dr. G’s) and saw a good opportunity for a club that would focus on that kind of music,” Mullenix said. The club’s name was chosen when Mullenix and a bunch of her friends got together to bo unce around ideas and some one suggested me 2 . “The name seemed to fit perfectly because we wanted the atmosphere to be high en ergy, so why not call it that,” she said. \ The club’s decor is the prod uct of a conglomeration of peo ple’s ideas: Mullenix, her boss, and all the friends who helped her paint. The walls are black, the molding bright yellow. Day-Glo graphics illuminate the walls. Colored beams re flect off the revolving mirrored ball suspended from the ceil ing. The prominent portrait of Einstein overlooking the dance . floor completes the picture. The official opening for me 2 is tentatively scheduled for Fri day, March 29, pending appro val of a liquor license. Mullenix said she plans to sell beer at lower than average prices and provide set-ups for those who wish to bring their own bottle. A free promotional party is planned this Saturday, from 10 p.m. to 1 a.m., to introduce the club to the community. Mullenix said she was wor ried when first approached with the idea for the club. She was afraid managing the club while going to school would be too heavy a responsibility. But she said she then realized what a wonderful opportunity she had to bring more variety to the entertainment scene in town. “My main motivation in doing this has come from my boredom with the lack of vari ety of entertainment in town,” she said. “I’ve been here for four years and I’ve become very bored with the predictability of the scenes of most of the clubs.” Mullenix thinks the best dance songs are rarely found in the “top 40.” She hopes “to pro vide a more stimulating atmo sphere for those that care to look beyond the scope of com mon radio music.” Wednesdays and Saturdays will be “neo-dance nights” at me 2 . Mullenix said she plans to focus on high energy dance music, leaning toward new wave and funk, with a lot of European flavor. She plans to schedule a dance band every Friday and hopes to have live entertain ment other nights as well. Bands she hopes to book in clude: The Judy’s, 4 Hams on Rye, Da Da Curve, Skank, The Zealots, The Natives and Ran dom Culture. At this point, Mullenix is not sure of her exact duties. She definitely will be handling en tertainment, but is unsure about such other aspects as fi nance or publicity. She said that would depend upon her time constraints as well as what her boss wants her to do. “I’m both nervous and excit ed,” she said. “I’ve never done anything like this before.” What Mullenix lacks in man agerial experience, she makes up for in her knowledge of the music scene. She has not only been the disc jockey at Dr. G’s, but has worked at Music Ex press for over two years. Her manager at Music Express had recommended her for the job at Dr. G’s because of her exten sive dance collection. She has also been a DJ at KANM, the student-operated radio station, for 10 months. She currently has a radio show Thursdays from noon to 4 p.m. Her DJ name is Betty Beatbox, and her show is called “Stimu lation: An Escape from Stagna tion with Betty Beatbox.” Although she is graduating in December, Mullenix may re main in town after graduation and manage me 2 full time. She’d like to stay around long enough to make the club a suc cess. \
