ONE PRIZE AWARDED EACH DAY KEI PACKARD Rangers should be improved Associated Press POMPANO BEACH, Fla.—The Texas Rangers ought to be able to score runs this season and pitching should be adequate, the Rangers’ hit ting coach says. What is crucial for the team’s suc cess, said Merv Rettenmund, is to catch and throw the baseball in the field. “The key is defense,” Retten mund said. “If we catch it like we did two years ago, we can win this divi sion. Our pitchers aren’t going to strike many people out, so we nave to move it around in the infield and catch it in the outfield.” It was the club’s inability to do ei ther of those things well that contrib uted mightily to last season’s 69-92 disaster, Rettenmund noted. Offensively, Rettenmund said the Rangers appear solid, but the two keys to a big year are George Wright, who is coming off an injury- plagued 1984, and Larry Parrish, who had his best all-around season. “We need George to have as good a year or better than he did in ’83,” Rettenmund said, “and for Larry Parrish to have a tremendous year.” The one troubling aspect of the Ranger lineup is a lack of overall speed. “We’re susceptible to the double play, so we have to avoid as many sit uations like that as we can,” Retten mund said. ESPN baseball poll finds Horns in third-place Associated Press TUCSON, Ariz. — Mississippi State, 7-0, remained No. 1 in the ESPN-Collegiate Baseball Poll for the third straight week, while Miami (Fla.) and Texas exchanged second- and third-place ranks. MSU’s Bulldogs have been bol stered by a combined 0.98 ERA and their pitchers have yet to give up a home run this season. Miami (17-5), which was No. 3 last week, swept a four-game series with New Orleans, while Texas (10-3) which had been No. 2, split two games with No. 5 Oklahoma (4-1) last week. Florida State (17-3) moved up to No. 4, replacing Arizona (21-6), which fell from the top 10 with three losses to UCLA (15-5-1). Others in the top 10 include Stan ford (15-4) which jumped from eighth to sixth; UCLA, which im proved to No. 7; Florida (14-2) up from tenth to eighth; Oklahoma State (2-2), which fell from seventh to ninth, and Georgia Tech (8-0) which remained No. 10.
