Team —Bat Mills, Baylori Brownlee and ByCHAREAN WILLIAMS Assistant Sports Editor After two national champion- ihips, you should expect only the aest out of the Texas A&M women’s ioftball team. However, who could or would have expected the Aggies to shut out heir opponents 38-0 in their first ournament of the spring season? The Aggies did just that over the JlveekencT at the Mardi Gras Championship Tournament in jpouma, La. “I didn’t expect for us to shut ev- jryone out,” said Aggie second base- nan Mary Schwind. ‘‘We just (vorked well together. We are play mg very good right now. Everything is clicking.” The stars in the seven-game tour- lament were numerous for the Ag- [ies. Schwind, shortstop Liz Mizera ind pitcher Shawn Andaya were se eded to the all-tournament team. Andaya was the tourney’s most valu- ible pitcher and Mizera was the most aluable hitter. In the championship game, An- jaya tossed a two-hitter as A&M Tanked Louisiana Tech 5-0. Mizera nocked in two runs and Schwind had two hits. A&M got to the championship ;ame by downing Baylor in a sur- risingly close game. The 1-0 win reduced even different heroes. Yvette Lopez pitched a three-hit- [er and Josi Carter had the game- inning hit. “Baylor played surprisingly well,” itcher Karen Athanacio said. Their pitcher was slower which threw some of our players off.” Cindy Cooper had two RBIs and udy Trussell had a pair of hits in a -0 pasting of Missouri in the first game. Andaya struck out 10 to pick up the win. Athanacio pitched two no-hitters ver the weekend. She fanned six in 5-0 win over St. Louis and shut out vansville 14-0. Tt was good,” Athanacio said. I changed some hings which helped my pitching. 1 (vant to do a lot better though." The Aggies also picked up wins ak 09 over Sam Houston State and South western Louisiana. Schwind said the Aggies should be better than last season, when they lost to UCLA in the NCAA final, be cause of the depth they have this year. The Aggies travel to California Thursday to compete in numerous tournaments against such perrenial g owers as Cal-State Fullerton, Cal- tate Berkley, Fresno State and the University of the Pacific. “This will be more or less our true test,” Schwind said.
