While working at the Flamingo, Dil lon learns about life in the fast lane through the actions of the Flamingo's card shark owner. The film is set in 1963 New York with most of the ac tion taking place on Long Island. It’s fairly predictable, but fun — kinda like two hours of “Happv Days. " PG- 13. 2oiO: Roy Schieder, John Lithgow and Bob Balaban plav three American astronauts sent aboard a Russian spaceship to Jupiter. Their mission is to discover what happened to The Discovery, find out if astronaut David Bowman is dead and decide who or what is controlling the monolith dis covered in “2001.” Peter Hvams (“Outland”) directed, produced and wrote the screenplay. PG. The Perils of Gwendolyn: Word has it this movie resembles “The Per ils of Pauline” and is a female version of “Raiders of the Lost Ark.'' The tele vision ad shows a hunk-type guv be ing thrown in a cage and then put on an island inhabitied bv women. Sup posedly one of those scantily clad la dies is Pauline. Fun times for all. R. Post Oak 764-0616 City Heat: Clint Eastwood and Burt Reynolds arc finally in a film together. What sounds like a simple plot — a smooth-talking private eve (Reynolds) and a hard-nosed cop (Eastwood) lock horns while trying to bring rival gangsters to justice — turns out to be incredibly confusing on screen. Ba sically, this film is a loss. PG. Places In The Heart: When her husband is killed. Sally Field must take control of her life, her family and the farm. Set in the Depression, this film gives Field an opportunity^ to do her Norma Rae bit again and she gives an outstanding performance. There is an unnecessary subplot in this one, but overall, it is quite good. Field is worth the price of admission alone. PG. Protocol: Goldie Hawn stars as a spirited Washington D.C. cocktail waitress who accidently saves the life of a foreign dignitarv. So, the State Department offers her the job of en tertaining visiting diplomats. Buck Henrv had a hand in the screenplay and it shows. Some call this the se- qual to “Private Benjamin.” PG. Schulman Six 775-2468 The River: Sissy Spacek and Mel Gibson star as farmers attempting to hold off the inevitable. Big time farm ers want to flood the valley where Spacek and Gibson live due to a water shortage. This movie is depressing anywaV vou look at it. If you're from a city and know absolutely nothing about farmers and the hardships they must endure this is a must see. PG-13 Beverly Hills Cop: Eddie Murphy, in a role written for (can you believe this?) Sylvester Stallone, stars as a De troit cop who follows the trail of a friend’s killer to Beverly Hills. This is a comedv-thriller with tons of action and Murphv is as great as always. Paramount executives are already dis cussing a sequel Classic Eddie Mur phy. R. IVIicki and Maude: Dudley Moore plays a TV reporter who desperately wants to be a father. So when his mis tress, Maude (Amy Irving), becomes pregnant, he marries her. But he is al ready married to Micki (Ann Reink- ing)j a successful lawyer. Surprise: Micki becomes pregnant too. This comedv was directed by Blake Ed wards and is delightful. One of the funniest modes to come along in a long time. PG-13. The Cotton Club: Richard Gere stars in this Roaring Twenties melo drama as Dixie Dwver. a cornet player who becomes involved with mobsters at The Cotton Club, where blacks per form for a white audience. Lots of jazz music and fantastic dancing. See page three for a complete movie re dew. R. Starman: All life forms in the uni verse have been receiving an invita tion to Earth since 1977 thanks to Voyager II. In this film, directed by John Carpenter (“Halloween”), some thing out there, played by Jeff Bridges, accepts the invitation, comes to Earth and clones himself human from a lock of hair. Karen Allen has the mis fortune (or is she actually fortunate?) to be chosen to drive Bridges to a ren- devous point with his homeplanet shuttle. Reallv a good movie, folks. PG. Dungeonmaster: I have no prior knowledge of this mode and judging from the movie poster, I hope I have no past knowledge either. The poster shows some hulking figure over some vague figure-things. Looks pretty ex citing, huh? R. Manor East 823-8300 Pinocchio: Who can resist Wait Dis- nev? The little wooden puppet is back in town, trying to win the hearts of bovs and girls everywhere. He already won mine. Sorrv guvs. Stars Jiminey Cricket and the Blue Fairy in support ing roles.G. Tuff Turf: Kim Richards has trav eled a long way from Witch Moun tain. Now she's at a normal high school, hanging around with high school trash and doesn’t seem to care. That is, until a handsome stranger en rolls in the school and starts disrupt ing the precarious dating system.R. Dune: Under the auspices of Direc tor David Lynch (“The Elephant Man’’ and “Eraserhead”), Frank Herbert’s science fiction novel classic has finally become a movie. Newcomer Kyle MacLachin stars as Paul Atreides, a legendarv hero who leads a rebellion against the forces of darkness on the desert planet Dune. If you didn’t read the book — bring someone with you who has. Otherwise, you will be to- tallv confused and aimlessly lost. PG- 13.
