Monday, November 12, 1984/The Battalion/Page 11 V. n Oilers win at last United Press International KANSAS CITY, Mo. — It took 1 1 weeks but Houston finally struck oil on the Moon. Warren Moon, the $6 million quarterback of the Oilers, rushed for one touchdown and passed for 180 yards and another score in a 17-16 victory Sunday over the Kansas City Chiefs, thus ending Houston’s NFL record string of 23 consecutive road losses. It was Houston’s first road win since a 9-3 triumph over the Cleve land Browns Sept. 13, 1981 and its first victory after 10 straight losses this season. It also snapped an over all 11-game losing streak dating back to the 15th game of the 1983 season when the Oilers beat Cleveland, 34- 27. “This win will help us more than it would most teams,” Moon said. “It’s a confidence builder for a very young football team. Most of the guys here are in their first and second years and this proves to us we can win with this coaching staff, with this quarterback and with this foot ball team.” Nick Lowery kicked a field goal in each of the first three quarters to stake the Chiefs to a 9-7 lead. But Houston nose tackle Mike. Stensrud recovered a fumbled snap from cen ter by K.C. quarterback Todd Black- ledge at the Oiler 45 with 62 seconds left in the third period. Moon capitalized By driving the Oilers 55 yards in eight plays for a 14-9 lead with his 1-yard touchddWn run. Moon scored one play after beating a full Kansas City blitz with a lob pass over the head of cornerb, ack Greg Hill to Tim Smith for k 25-yard gain. Joe Cooper closed out the scoring for the Oilers with a 44-yard field goal with 1:34 left in the game to give Houston a 17-9 lead. That en abled Houston to absorb a 4-yard touchdown pass f rom Blackledge to Henry Marshall with 26 seconds left in the game. Moon threw his touchdown pass to tight end Jamie Williams in the second quarter and finished the day 19-of-26 as the Oilers gave Coach Hugh Campbell his first NFL vic tory. “I think this one will really help War ren,” Smith said. “Whenever he has played a good game in the past, it was still a loss. None of us could feel real good about any of our previous performances because we didn’t win the game. But he can savor this one. We can all savor it.” Dallas snatches critical win from shuffling Cards 1 United Press International ST.
