Five men are in the band, four of whom are A&M stu dents, and all are accomplished musicians. Notropis is now the house band at Le Cabaret and the group plays there every Sat urday night. The band's first engagement was playing back-up for jazz singer Totlyn Jackson, which they did almost exclusively for two months. They also played a great deal at Baker Street Bar and Restaurant. "We had only played once in a garage before we got our first job and we knew we'd be good because we had a small group outside our garage," says Chris Amemiya, who plays trombone and flugel horn for the band. "We had all played with bands before, so people knew us," drummer Jeff Burris says. "Chris had played for minnows in his lab." Amemiya, a doctoral student in genetics, does research on a type of fish called notropis — hence the name of the band. He says it turned out to be a good choice, because the name is catchy. "Basically it was a makeshift sort of thing," Amemiya says of the band's formation. "I don't know how these things hap pen, they just work out." Bass player Brian Lippman says he met Amemiya through a mutual friend who plays gui tar. "I ran into Chris in my gara ge," Lippman says. "We did our first jamming together there and talked afterwards." Lippman, Burris and key board player Joe Warner met in the TAMU Jazz Band. They all got together and later added a saxophone player. The reed player, Donald Childs, is the se nior member of the band (with a son about the age of the other members of Notropis). Childs has been playing professionally since the 11th grade. He sat in with the band at Baker Street and eventually joined up. And on occasion, he plays with the contemporary jazz band High Chicago. "When we were with Totlyn, we played a lot of straight ahead jazz — you'd probably call it swing," Amemyia says. They have continued playing jazz, but now the music is of their own choosing. These days, they play a vari ety of jazz because they all have different preferences. Warner says the rhythm section likes reggae and music with a lot of rhythm, Childs has his roots in blues and Amemyia listens to Charlie Parker, be-bop type music. "The main reason (they've stayed with jazz) is because we really like to play jazz," Ame myia says. "It's not the money or anything like that. It's the challenge. You can play the same tone 200 times and never play it the same way twice." Warner says, "It's a really fun type of music to play." Lippman, the bassist, says he has been a rock and roller all his life and played in rock and roll bands when he was in high school, but now prefers playing jazz. "What's good about it is that it really takes talent to play," he says. "In rock and roll, you just go out and beat your instru ment to death. This takes a lot of finesse, a lot of concentra tion. It allows you a lot of cre ativity." The band often relies on sheet music, with some improv isation. Amemyia works up most of the arrangements. Al though Notropis plays some of its own music, he says, "it is not as popular because people tend to like listening to things that they've heard before." All the band members play more than one instrument. In addition to the sax, Childs plays a little flute, bass, oboe and bas soon. He decided to take up the saxophone when he was a child listening to his neighbor and the neighbor's friend playing. "It says something to me," Childs says. "It's really a chal lenge to get off on a love affair with your instrument. That's what I call it. It's a love affair to me. Burris has played drums for eight years and also plays tim pani and violin. He is an envi ronmental design major, which leaves little time for music. "I've always tried to balance the two," he says. "Music and design kind of go hand in hand." He says he is working musical proportions into ar chitecture. All of the members of Notro pis stressed that they perform for the sheer enjoyment of play ing, not for the money which is only a supplemental income. Childs made his living for a year by performing, but with a wife and two children to sup port, he had to seek other em ployment. Childs says that the money he made wasn't enough "to taste the finer things in life," but it is a good supplemental in come. Amemyia say, "I'm sure all of us have considered it. It's just really hard to make a go of it. Banks don't give you credit. You always have to hustle for your jobs." Each member of the band readily praises the others. "I've learned a lot about working with other people from these guys," Burris says. "I've never played with guys so mu sically tight before. "Sometimes bands have the greatest people in them, but they can't play together." Burris said that he and Warner, partic ularly, have learned to accent each other. Childs praises Amemyia's tal ent. "To me it's a brand new learning Experience," he says. "Chris is such an intimidating figure on his own. He's really good. He's really tough." Childs thinks the band mem bers are learning from each other.
