AGGIELAND SCHWINN® COLLEGE STATION 696-9490 845-2611 Aggie women want ’84 volleyball crown By DAVE SCOTT Sports Writer All coaches and players are opti mistic before the start of a season, but Coach Terry Condon and her women’s volleyball team are dead se rious with their optimism. “We can beat Texas and win con ference,” Condon says. “I really think we can do it this year.” Second year player Angie Smith echoes her coaches sentiments. “We’re going to be stronger this year,” Smith says, “and we’re going to win conference.” Last year the Aggies finished sec ond in the SWC to Texas, losing the conference crown on the last match of the season when they lost to UT. However, Condon has her sights set higher than just conference. She’s looking to post-season play for the Ag’s. “We should be invitied to the NCAA regionals and we could win those,” Condon says, “we could even make it to the final four if the team can do it upstairs.” By “upstairs,” Condon means mentally. She says in the past the team has been intimidated when playing Texas and the strong teams from the West Coast. But Condon says her team made a lot of progress in that area during their spring sea son. During the spring schedule, which is called the “open season,” the Aggies played about two or three tournaments a month. And also dur ing the spring, the team practices ev ery day. For the spring matches Condon said she let the team coach itself , by doing that, she says, the team was forced to take the full responsibility for the game. “If we lost,” Condon says, “they couldn’t blame me.” Smith says the team’s confidence in itself grew because of the tough workouts Condon put them through. “We started intensely lifting weights and running,” Smith says. “We’re a lot physically stronger and that helped us mentally by giving us more confidence. We thought if we could conquer practice, then we could conquer anything.” Condon says the key for the Ag gies is going to be the two middle blockers, Sherri Brinkman and Che- Photo by DAYlSCOTl Texas A&M’s Chris Zogata, left, and Chemine Doty attempt to block a spike shot against the University of Texas. mine Doty. And Brinkman is the perfect player to have as a key for the team. The junior from Illinois has been named All-SWC both of the her sea sons in the conference. “She’s definitely the best middle blocker in the conference," Condon says, “and she could be the best in the country. She’s quick in the back- court and she’s quick in the front court.” Condon said her top seven players were probably Brinkman and Doty at middle docker, Margaret Spence and Smith at outside hitter, Lesha Beaklev, Chris Zogata, and Sm Gilner at setter.
