"If I had a place to keep him, I'd take this one home with me." Sweetheart has not stopped honking since he first spotted Gunter, and she kneels down, putting her face inches from his. "You stop it, and behave," Gunter scolds, petting the bird's back and giving him a hug. Although Sweetheart does not do as he was told, he does return the hug, putting his beak on Gunter's shoulder. Gunter says a lot of people, especially elderly people and children, come to the park regu larly just to see the birds. "We have names for them, but the people that come out to visit them give them different names," she says. Anne Vestano, a senior at A&M Consolidated High School, and Scott Oldner, a sophomore electrical engi neering major at Texas A&M, come to Central on Saturdays to relax and watch the birds. "Last year we used to have names for a couple of them out here," Vestano says. Oldner says he likes Central because of the animals. "We'll be out here a lot this year," he says. "It's fun to watch the little kids." Mark and Lexie Day come to Central with their four children to feed the geese and ducks and to walk around the park. Day says his children enjoy feeding the birds. "They had talked about it from time to time, and I remem bered that," he says one Satur day afternoon. "I just kind of suggested that this would be a good time to do it." Many of the park's visitors bring their dogs with them, Gunter says. "The problem we have with dogs is that people don't under stand that dogs are fascinated with birds," she says. "They chase birds, and it takes time and money to treat the birds." Gunter says this past winter Marching George, a rooster, got frostbite on his feet and on his cone, which is on the top of a rooster's head. Gunter kept him in a pen for two weeks and nursed him back to health. "Then we turned him loose, and ever since then he mar ches," Gunter says. "He's an older bird, and I think he just got stiff." She says that sometimes when she gets to work in the morning. Marching George is waiting for her on the porch railing of the park's ranch house-style office, and he crows "good morning" to her. As if to demonstrate, George, a few feet away from the office on the grass, puffs up his chest and crows. Gunter likes all of her babies for a different reason. "The guineas (a West African fowl) are better than a watch dog, really," she says. "If you hear them hollering, you know there's something out there that shouldn't be. My grandmother used to say, 'If you have a gui nea on your place, that's all you need.'" Gunter says she likes the pea cocks—there are two males and two females at Central—be cause they can fly. "I think what I like about the peacocks so much is that they can fly so well, and they can get away so well from dogs and things," she says."That's the reason we have them out here. They're fast. They're really fast. They go through these woods like a streak of lightning." After finishing her rounds and making sure that all of her babies are taken care of, Gunter returns to the office. Virginia, a female turkey, came into the office to greet her one morning, she says, looking out the office window at North, Virginia's mate. "They'll be good eating come Thanksgiving time," College Station Parks and Recreation Director Steve Beachy says, laughing. "Vonn's fattening them up for us, and we're going to eat them."
