Gretchen DeRoche is a traight parent of her gay son, 'aryll, and talked on the coni ng out of parents and gays. De- oche shared what she felt vhen her son told her of his ho- nosexualily almost five years ‘go 'll was extremely traumatic tfirst," she said. “I had no idea if what a gay person was. I lidn’t knowhow it would affect ur life or what sort of people ie would associate with. My irst reaction was, ‘Don’t tell me ibout it’ because then it made it eal.” DeRoche said she explored ivery possibility to change her “‘Couldn’t you become a monk,’ I asked him, ‘Couldn’t you be happy just raising dogs,”’ she said. When a solution could not be reached, DeRoche went to her pastor for advice and found him surprisingly supportive. Daryll also encouraged her to attend a national group called “Parents of Gays” which she later said was the most positive thing she has participated in. “My overriding reaction was fear,” DeRoche said. “So I edu cated myself as much as possible through books, meetings and literature. Within three months, I felt comfortable with the fact that Daryll was gay.” DeRoche suggests that gays give their parents positive arti cles to read for more under standing, hut above all, they should give them time. “Parents need time to ad just,” she said. “It was a shock to me. I was the outsider. I told him that ‘You’re out of the closet, but now I’m in.’” DeRoche became active as chairperson in a local support group in Seattle, Washington to help other parents accept their gay children. She said that al though it is a support group for parents, it is also a support group for gays trying to tell their parents about their homo sexuality. To help the public better un derstand gays, DeRoche speaks at high schools, universities and on radio talk shows about how parents can deal with that type of situation in a positive way. “I would not be sharing in Daryll’s life if he hadn’t told me,’’she said. “His telling me has been a positive thing in my life. “I wouldn’t change him in any way. He’sjust super the way he is.” a Architects to lecture Architects coming from New fork, England, India and Mex- co will speak on regionalism mil international culture in Rudder Theatre Friday.
