It's really not Elvis' fault; he just happens to be one of the most creative and consistent artists to emerge in the last decade. Punch the Clock is another great addition to the Costello thursday specials 7:30 (B RED BARBER REMEM BERS Veteran baseball announcer Red Barber describes how his career developed. 9:00 O O ID LIVE AND IN PER SON Sandy Gallin hosts the last of three celebrity-packed entertain ment specials, to be broadcast live and featuring the finale of “A Cho rus Line” at New York City’s Shu- bert Theatre. 11:40<D ’★★V4 “Women At West Point” (1979) Linda Purl, Andrew Stevens. A group of women over reviews bibliography. This time out the keyboards backed up by solid brass are up front throughout, with Costello's vocals almost al ways the focal point in the mix. It is difficult to say which songs are better than the rest on a Costello album, but there are ones that have more instant appeal. My favorite in this col lection is "Shipbuilding." A sparse arrangement with a blues underpinning set off the vocals in this relaxed ballad. Perhaps this is a relic of the country album we saw last year. The first single, "Everyday I Write the Book," also is catchy, with backing vocals reminiscent of the Motown Sound. Costello slowly is getting more FM expo sure with the help of the New Cult of MTV. On the back side is the '80s version of "Mack the Knife," a tune called "The Invisible Man." Bertolt Brecht would be proud of this little testimony to Elvis' view of the world. I don't believe that a bad — or even mediocre — Elvis Costello album exists. Although Punch the Clock will not go down as one of his most outstanding pro jects, any lover of new music cannot go wrong with this selec tion. Yaz You and Me Both Sire three and a half stars Yaz is composed of Alison Moyet and Vince Clarke, one of the most interesting combina tions in the pop music field. come tradition to become the first female military cadets admitted to West Point. A gentle and reserved family man becomes a deadly menace by night when he is transformed into a werewolf. 3:30© ★★★ “All That Heaven Allows” (1956) Jane Wyman, Rock Hudson. Criticism from others almost forces a woman to give up the gardener she truly loves. 4:00© A A "Calling Dr. Gillespie" (1942) Lionel Barrymore, Donna Reed. Dr. Gillespie becomes the intended victim of an unstable ex patient’s revenge scheme. . Both have a heavy interest in synthesizer music and the stu dio technology of scratch dubs but don't have any of the stilted qualities of most similar artists. "State Farm" is the standout track on this work, and it is an excellent example of how over dubs and studio repeats can cre ate both energy and a previously unattainable vocal intensity. This has to be one of the best new wave songs ever played for the dance floor. (The 12" version is both extended and remixed to an even more complex level.) The only major problems on this album occur when Yaz lets the rhythm get too fast for the human ear to hear. Conversely, the slower songs are more in teresting and warmer. "No body's Diary" shows the guts in Moyet's voice and also how emotional depth can be com bined with short lyrics. The album has one other problem which is nearly indica tive of the synth-pop medium in general — it doesn't carry a firm intensity to the end. The com mitment to innovation some times leads off onto deadend paths and the songs suffer for it. Moyet and Clarke have stated that they will be going their separate ways for a while, so it will be interesting to see in what direction their sounds move in future projects. Personally, I put my bet with Moyet's voice on future Billboard charts. — Cary Stegall Review albums provided by Hastings Books and Records. PH0T0C0PI ES DON'T TELL ME, ... YOU'RE THE COPY CAT... //
