"The zoos are more equipped to handle large exotic animals, Watkins said. "We primarily work with difficult cases. Admittedly, we don't have the expertise in handling really wild animals. However, we do have specialists in the field of orthopedics for animals." Recently, an Addax, a wild antelope, was brought in by a private ranch to be treated for a broken elbow. A&M often works closely with several of the larger zoos. A giraffe from the Fort Worth Zoo was brought in to be treated for an infected joint last year. Also, a camel was treated for a bone cyst in his stifle. The college also has worked on an elephant in the last few years. Aside from routine treat ments, research — which re quires the use of exotic animals — is continuous in the college of veterinary medicine. One such example is the colony of mar mosets — a small tropical monk ey. This research currently is being conducted under the dire ction of Dr. Franklin Stein, asso ciate professor of veterinary anatomy. The colony was initiated in 1975. Funded by the National Institute of Health, the colony was started with the intention of developing a two-species colony of marmosets: one fairly com mon species and one en dangered species. The colonies eventually would be used for re search. Since the first of September, the research has shifted gears. The research is funded at this time by the Institute of Compa rative Medicine, and currently is directed at finding a cure for the disease, AIDS. "AIDS closely parallels to a naturally occuring disease in marmosets," Stein said. "We hope to transmit AIDS to the marmosets and find if there's a treatment," he said. One hundred and twenty marmosets are used in the re search. They are caged in in door/outdoor pens on the veter inary research farm. They are small and easy to work with. "We handle the marmosets with leather gloves," Stein said. "They're semi-tame. There's no such thing as a tame mar moset." The marmosets are expensive to work with, Stein said. "It costs us $1.25 per day per monk ey. This includes personnel, facilities and a specialized diet for the marmosets." HI THERE* ' HELLO?.*
