Strictly by Cathy Smith Battalion reporter Strictly Tamoo, a jazz ensemble composed of Texas A&M students and former students, is named af ter a club in Dallas, the band’s founder says. Armando Canales, the founder, spent a lot of time at a jazz club named “Strictly Tabu. ” The name of his band began as “Strictly TAMU” but was changed to “Tamoo” to avoid copyright viola tions, Canales says. The band formed two years ago when Canales sent out fliers to find people interested in forming a jazz band. The response was enor mous, Canales said. Band mem bership has fluctuated over the years. Today’s Tamoo is composed of Canales and four others who al l belong to the Texas A&M Jazz Band. The group has played at wed dings, clubs and the Miss Texas A&M Scholarship Pageant. The band’s favorite performance was for a retirement party last year, Canales said. “We had a 70-year-old man dancing in front of the band,” drummer Jeff Burris said. Tamoo performs about once a month and tries to play as much as possible, Burris said. The group calls itself a jazz en semble but will play whatever is called for, said Burris, an environ mental design major. “We’re slaves to our audience,” he said. Tamoo has no set fee for per formances. The cost covers their expenses, and then they charge whatever seems fair, depending on distance and length of the per formance. Money is not as impor tant as getting to play, the mem bers agree. All members of the band have played a lot, with at least seven years of experience each. Canales, Tamoo the self-taught founder, has play ed for 12 years. Joe Warner, keyboard-player, has played for 15 years. He majors in petroleum en gineering. Burris took private les sons for two years and has played the drums for seven years. Dave Purcell plays percussion, trum pet, flugelhom and flute, and has been playing for 12 years. Purcell graduated from Texas A&M with a geophysics degree and works in Houston. Tarek Amer, bassist, is working on his master’s of busi ness administration here. They all enjoy playing locally and enjoy their chances to meet and play with other bands. Canales, who writes jazz music for the group, has friends who play in Houston clubs, and Tamoo hopes to audition and play there some time. Surplus sells big United Press International NEW YORK — Americans live in a disposable society, where to day’s trend is tomorrow’s yawn and last year’s Christmas present is long since out of style. Thank heavens, says Dennis Carlson, who has made a career out of recycling the brand-new re jects of a fickle culture. Carlson is president of C.O.M.B. Co., a Minneapolis based liquidator that buys up manufacturers’ surplus stock and resells it direct to consumers. “The man who created the sur plus business in the first place may have been Henry Ford, with the idea of built-in obsolesence, creat ing a new model every year,” Carlson said. A researcher once told Carlson the average 10-speed bicycle bought in the late 70s was used only three times before it was stashed away in the attic. Carlson, who liquidated about 180,000, be lieves him.
