Zinn Battalion staff Horror films have taken a new dimension as of recently. This classic genre of films no longer claims to scare us by giving us the biggest and the most gory movie to date. Horror and fright have taken more intellectual approaches. Movies now try to scare us by playing tricks on our mind. A good 1983 horror film will leave the scariest part to your im agination and play off common fears. The latest movie to do so is Nightmares. Nightmares is divided into four basic plots. The first story is entitled “Ter ror in Tapanga. ” The story line is an old one — a maniac on the loose. The first scene graphically shows the escaped patient mur dering a sheriff. Next a suburban family is spied and the audience begins to wonder who is going to be the next victim. The mother is the first guess. She insists on going out for a pack of cigarettes even after she hears news stories about the escaped mental patient who is armed and dangerous. Surprising ly there are no more victims — that is all I will say. The second story is announced as “Beat the Bishop.” The story revolves around a youth in San Bernadino Valley who is obsessed with a video game called “the different' Bishop. ” He spends the rest of the story trying to reach the myste rious 13th level of the game. When he actually does reach the 13th level, he is sorry. The most notable thing about this story is that the video arcade that the youth frequents is in the Galleria, and his girlfriend is Moon Unit Zappa. Thank goodness the wri ters and director of this segment used her as a subtle element rather than a blatant character. It could have ruined what was perhaps the best part of the entire movie. “The Benediction” is the title of the third story. It follows the tradi tional story line of good versus evil. A priest loses his faith and decides to leave his parish, and as he drives through the desert he is challenged by the devil. Finally a story titled “Night of the Rat” is presented. An upper- class family is plagued by rats in their beautiful home. The weaknesses of this movie are many but all are attributed to one major flaw — the writing. The writing in this film made the movie unbelievable in many inst ances. The poor writing also made the actors seem stupid with their poor dialogue. For instance, in “Night of the Rat” the story was bad and became worse when the little girl looked at a giant rat in her room and said “Mommy, I tricks think it’s trying to tell me some thing.” The writing also is trite. The stories were old and the outcomes were predictable. Between the ridiculousness and the predicta bility the movie was almost un bearable, except in the “Beat the Bishop” story. It was a story of action, and the actors were able to carry the pace of the story much better because of the limited dia logue. The strengths of the film are limited. One of the biggest was that the movie tried to startle you by playing with your mind. The film didn’t startle the viewer by seeing how absolutely gory the whole thing could be. Refreshing is the word to describe this new concept. And for this, the film should be commended. Also commendable is the con cept of the film. It was interesting to be able to go to a movie and be able to see four different stories within a two-hour time span. The four stories gave the sense of read ing a story collection, or being told ghost stories by a friend during a slumber party. However, the film might have been stronger if the stories had been tied together, in any way. Out of five stars I give this film two and a half. The film isn’t bad, it just has to many flaws to make it worth $4.
