Aggies (continued from page 11) ions, we’ve performed well at imes, but our pitching was real ly relying on Rick Luecken to win a lot of ball games for us. But be just can’t seem to turn the corner and win ball games. Just look at our team ERAs and that tells the whole story.” In 1981 and 1982, the Aggies turned the tide during the last two weeks of the season to qual ify for one of the four post- Foul weather season tourney spots. But it’s going to be much tougher this time, because Texas A&M still has to play Texas Tech and Rice on the road, and Baylor and Texas in Olsen Field. “We’ve got our backs to the wall,” Chandler said, “but like I’ve said all along, our pitching is just so spotty. Now we’ve got to go on the road and play Texas Tech (which won two of three from No. 3-ranked Houston over the weekend). We’ve been in the (SWC) tournament every year but one, and this year’s league looks like it has more ba lance. But it still looks like Texas is going to run away with it. “We’ve got to improve now or our chances are going to dimin ish awfully fast.” From the looks of the league standings, Chandler and the Aggies can count on the Cougars and Longhorns mak ing the tournament with no trouble. Whereas the Razor- backs usually get one of the top three spots, they’ll have to light Rice, Baylor and Texas Tech for the two remaining tournament berths. the four remaining leij series, they’ll finish 10-11 in| league. During each of thep two years, Texas A&M hasq if led for the fourth tourney with the same record — 10-I®q| 7l Here’s how the SWC s J ings look through the week games: As for the Aggies’ chances, if they win two games in each of Texas — 5-1 Houston — 7-2 Rice — 6-6 Baylor — 6-6 Arkansas — 6-6 TCU — 4-5 Texas Tech — 3-6 Texas A&M — 2-7 Aggie tennis teams split matches in high winds The Aggie men’s tennis team overcame a 7-2 road loss to the Houston Cougars on Friday afternoon to trounce the Rice Owls by a score of 8-1 Saturday in Houston. Friday’s match with the Cougars, played in the middle of 50-55 mph winds, was decided in singles play, when UH won Five of six matches. Only Kimmo Alkio was able to win for Texas A&M, defeating Houston’s Dacio Campos 6-3, 1-6, 6-2. Texas A&M coach David Kent said the match with the Cougars seemed “more like handball,” as all the players had to serve underhanded because of the high winds. Tom Judson, the Aggies’ No. 2 singles player, was injured in singles play, but was able to finish the match. He didn’t play in doubles against UH, nor did he play in Satur day’s victory over the Owls. Kent said he was pleased with the victory over Rice, since Rice had defeated the Cougars ear lier in the season. Texas A&M, which now has a 21-6 record on the year, hosts Arkansas at 1:30 Friday after noon at the Omar Smith Tennis Center. The Aggies will play the Texas Longhorns in Austin on Saturday at 1:30. The Aggie women’s team raised its record to 15-7 on the season with a 7-2 victory over Houston Baptist University here Saturday. Vanne Akagi, Teresa Landry and Laura Hanna won singles matches in straight sets and Liliana Fernandez won in three sets. Texas A&M won all three of its doubles matches. The women’s squad will host Houston on Thursday at 1:30 p.m. and Texas Tech on Friday afternoon at 1:30. Here are complete results from the men’s weekend matches: Joelson-Alkio (A&M) def.
