Battalion/Page 5 November 30, 1982 Harrelson tells of his frame-up United Press International SAN ANTONIO — Charles Harrelson, calmed by the four- day Thanksgiving holiday, Monday resumed testimony in his defense of charges he mur dered a federal judge by claim ing he was framed by his friend Pete Kay. Harrelson,44, said Kay work ed with L.as Vegas gambler Jim my Chagra and Chagra’s attor ney-brother Joe to make Harrel son “take the heat” for the 1979 shooting of U.S. District Judge John H. Wood in the parking lot of Wood’s San Antonio apart ment. Harrelson, a gambler who had been convicted of another contract killing, said the frame- up began in May of 1979 when Kay, a gambler from Huntsville, asked to borrow Harrelson’s wife’s car for what Harrelson suspected was a dope deal in West Texas. Harrelson delivered the car to Kay in Midland on May 15, 1979, where — coincidently, he said — Wood was holding court. Prosecutors have said the pre sence of Harrelson’s car at the Midland airport and his having checked into a Midland hotel in dicate he was “stalking” Wood. But, Harrelson testified, “I be lieve someone made a conscious effort to have me there.” Harrelson also said Joe Chag ra lied when he testified earlier that Harrelson said he had tried to kill the judge during that period of time in Midland. “Joe Chagra is telling whatev er is going to help Joe Chagra,” Harrelson said. Prosecutors say Jimmy Chag ra hired Harrelson for $250,000 to kill Wood because Wood was to preside at Chagra’s drug trial, and that Chagra feared Wood would pronounce a tougher sentence than any other judge. Harrelson testified most of last week prior to the Thank sgiving recess, and once cross examination began, he lost his temper in several fiery ex changes with Assistant U.S. Attorney Ray Jahn. Harrelson’s wife JoAnn, already convicted of buying the rifle which prosecutors say was used to kill Wood, and Jimmy Chagra’s wife Elizabeth, are being tried with Harrelson on lesser charges connected with Wood’s death. staff photo by Octavio Garcia Hmnim... what’s up doc?!
