lit g< Horns’ big victory brings that old fear of revenge Fred Akers sat uncomfortably in the con ference room deep inside UT’s Memorial Stadium, dressed all in orange and sipping on a Sprite. He had just come off the playing field a few minutes earlier, after having coached his team to an overwhelming 53-1 b victory over arch-enemy Texas A&M, and the cold and the wet and the general yucki- ness of the day still seemed to be tugging and pulling at his orange sleeve. Akers wiggled and shuffled, pushed his cap back on his head, and continued slug ging his Sprite quietly, almost as if it was his team that had just been trounced. The Longhorn head coach seemed a mil lion football fields away, while just behind the door to another room his players were whooping it up, with another victory, their eighth of the year, tucked away. Sometimes, Akers’ actions seemed to say, winning big isn’t all fun. • Sometimes, it can be scary. The only difference between the Lon ghorns and the Aggies on this Thanksgiving Day was a single play, a quirk of fate that gave momentum to the 'Horns and left the Aggies empty-handed. Brewer to Clark to Walls, as the poem would go. Robert Brewer, the 1982 Cotton Bowl hero, pitched to Darryl Clark who threw to Herkie Walls who ran for a touch down which, even though it was early, put the game on ice. i 1 John wagner And though the score was only 7-0 at that point, it was obvious the Aggies would never recover. They had been burned too badly. That single play broke the Aggies’ spirit, and as rebuilding teams tend to do, they fell completely apart. But on another day, at another time, or in another place, the outcome might have been different. Brewer knew it. And he wasn’t afraid to tell people. “They’re (the Aggies) just having a down year,” Brewer said in the ’Horns locker room. “It’s just like the one we were having two years ago when the Aggies came up here and beat us. Scores of f ootball games can be very deceiving, and that was the case today. “We’re not that much better than the Aggies.” Kiki DeAyala, the Longhorns’ defensive end, knew it too. He had nothing but praise for Aggie quarterback Gary Kubiak, even though DeAy ala spent the af ternoon knock ing Mr. Kubiak around. “You have to give him (Kubiak) credit,” DeAyala said. “He drops back and waits for an open receiver — even if people are hang ing all over him. “He waits till he finds an open man. That’s the mark of a good quarterback, and Kubiak is a good quarterback.” Whether Akers was bothered by the big win, no one will ever know. Those thoughts are his own. But Akers, while talking to re porters after the game, may have dropped a hint that the fear is lurking — a fear that one flay, these same kids who got beat are going to remember the whopping they took in the cold. “An\ win,” Akers said cautiously, “Over a good football team, and a big rival, is a big win. The only reason this one is better is because it’s the most recent.” Most recent. Remember that, when next year is here. Sometimes, winning big is scary, because people c/oremember. And that’s what scares Fred Akers. Alaska SMU takes SWC title Swim team finishes third by John Wagner Battalion Staff Fhe Texas A KM men’s swim ming and diving teams placed third behind strong teams from S.ML and the University of Texas in the Southwest Confer ence Invitational Champion ships this weekend in Houston. The 9th annual conference meet, held on the University of Houston campus, featured the SWC’s best swimmers and divers in a three-dav competition. The Aggies finished with 991.5 points, behind the Mustangs’ 1583 points and the Longhorns" 150b. Texas A&M was paced by senior co-captain Rick Walker. Walker placed first in two events, the 500-yard freestyle and the 1650-vard freest vie. finished second in the 50-yard butterfly and third in the 100- yard butterfly to score for the Aggies. His time of 23.21 in the 50-yard butterfly was just off the winner’s mark of 23.15. Walker had a time of 4.33:13 in the 500-yard freestyle and a clockingof 15.54:89 in the 1650- yard freestyle. Freshman Chris O'Neil Kevin Lonorigan, a junior, placed third in the 50-yard back- stroke and fifth in the 50-yard freestyle. The Aggie relav teams also had strong finishes with a third in the 200-medley relay, a third in the 400-medlev relav, and a fifth in the 800-free relay. The Aggies’ 200-free relay team finished first but was dis- qualified when freshman Clark McDonald was called f or a f alse- start. In swim team scoring, relay team points are doubled, so the Aggies’ finishes in those races was important to their overall finish. (continued from page 13) that on our end, (the Aggies).got the rebound, and on their end, they got the rebound and dunk ed it.” The Aggies out-rebounded UAA 51-30. Experience, Metcalf said, will play a key role in his squad’s for tunes during 1982-83. “That’s the big thing our ball club really needs,” he said. “When you’ve got four fresh man in your top ten players, you need that experience. The other teams in the tournament said they had young teams, but I don’t think anyone had as young a team as we did. “I thought we had as tough a draw as anyone in the tourna ment. We were always under the gun, because we always got ourselves into a hole by getting down in the first half of our games.” Texas A&M, which trailed Clemson 38-25 at halftime Fri day, outscored the Tigers 43-30 in the second half to send the game into overtime. However, the Aggies had a chance to win it in regulation, as it took Milan Belich’s three-pointer with three seconds left to bring Clemson into a 68-68 tie. The score was tied 74-74 af ter the first overtime, but the Ti gers won by three points when Clarke Bynum hit a 5-foot jum per and Fred Gilliam sank two technical foul freethrows. The technical, a crucial call which gave the ball back to the Tigers after the freethrows, re sulted when the Aggies called one too many timeouts during the second overtime. The Aggies had called time with 1:14 left and then with 3 seconds left. But af ter Clemson followed with another timeout with 3 seconds left, Metcalf cal led one which his team didn’t have. “I just made a mistake," Met calf said after Friday’s loss. “We didn’t want (the timeout).
