Election (continued from page 1) reports, some of which have been complimentary, to very de tailed reports, which have cited specific violations,” he said. He said he is following up those reports by talking to some of the people involved — clerks, voters and, in a few cases, the election judges. “What I’ve been trying to do is assess, to some degree, the validity of the complaints,” Stadelmann said. “Some of the complaints are quite valid — others, I don’t know. And others, I’ve decided probably were more misunderstandings than any serious problem. Of course, even if one person can’t vote, it’s serious — particularly to that person. But it may not involve any great legal issue.” Stadelmann said discrimina tion was most obvious in Pre cinct 10 in southeast College Sta tion, where he said students were being turned away illeg ally. Students whose registrations were fouled up, who weren’t on the election roster or who hadn’t received their voter registration cards, were turned away and not allow'ed to vote, Stadelmann said. Stadelmann said the [proce dure to follow in that case is to allow the person to sign an affi davit swearing that he had regis tered to vote, but he said the election judge for precinct 10, Audrey Bunting, would not allow students to do that. Stadelmann said that is con trary to federal election laws and is discriminatory. Bunting said she turned away students who were not regis tered correctly, but said that is what state law requires. “I’m not sure that not using the affadavit in question is con trary to state law,” Bunting said. “The people that are allowed to vote are those who are regis tered to vote. “There are specific laws that pertain to who votes. I don’t be lieve he (Stadelmann) under stands the issue.” The executive committee the Brazos County Republic Party will be meeting next to discuss what should be ties about the charges of discrimin tion.
