MIDNIGHT SHOW SAT. Accompanied by pianist Judith Fleisher, Swados played the guitar, sang selections from her Broadway shows, and sang the works of her favorite poets which she had set to music. Swados opened with a song she wrote called “A Bird’s La ment” which was about a woman who was half bird — half on the ground, and half in the air. Swa dos explained that the song was in a language that she and a friend had made up, and that sounds rather than words con veyed the meaning of the song. The song consisted of a variety of wordless notes in which could be heard the cooing, the flap ping, the trill, and the shriek of one who might well be half bird, half woman. “I’ve sung this in Jersey, in New York, and in Israel, and no body has any trouble under standing it,” she said, “If you can get through this, the rest will be a snap.” Swados also sang several selections from her production “Alice in Concert,” and from her Broadway play “Runaways.” One of the most striking pieces she sang was a poem cal led “Daddy” which she had set to music. “Daddy”, a poembv via Plath, is an anti-malediaiii which entails the hatred d Nazi-like husband/fatherfii Swados likened “Daddy" modern-day version of died of Medea, a woman in Giil legend who, when deserted® her lover, killed herch vengeful rage. Clements says he lost by calling wrong plays United Press International AUSTIN — Gov. Bill Cle ments dredged up football metaphors to explain how he must have “called the wrong plays” in losing by a surprisingly large amount to a jubilant At torney General Mark White. For his part, White, who spent $6.3 million compared to Cle ments’ record $11.8 million cam paign, said Wednesday he had a “gut feeling” in the last two days of the campaign that he would win with 53 percent of the vote. Based on complete returns, he won with 52.9 percent of the votes. According to White, a heavy turnout of Hispanic voters in the Rio Grande Valley was the key to his victory margin as well as a heavier than expected turnout.
